smetrick (18), Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 13, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours and looks like most other IPAs; however a different experience when tasted. A delightful fragrant nose, smooth body feels good in the mouth, and a great balance of hops and malt. The best IPAs IMO are the balanced ones and this is one of the best I’ve tried (dogfish head too)- but I tend to drink local beers. Affordable and quaffable. Available only from late fall to winter. msante79 (778), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Mar 12, 2009 12oz bottle. Finally get to try this brew thanks to Mrchoppin. Pours hazy amber with thin off-white head. Aroma is strong with citrus, hops, caramel and a touch of pine. Flavor is bitter hops, grapefruit, sweet malts and caramel. More malt than I thought there would be. Could use some citrus hops for my palate. Like this better the Hopback but was expecting a little more. Pretty solid brew though. trevor211 (499), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 12, 2009 Big thanks to JB175 for the bottle! Imperial Amber my left foot! This is an IIPA all the way through. Pours a transparent orange, with a smallish head. Aroma is hops, hops and more hops. Look at the label and believe it - this actually has notes of pineapple it’s so hoppy. So resiny it’s sweet. Just enough caramel malt to balance. Flavor is right there - big, big citrus and pine hop notes, with the malts holding off until the aftertaste. Great dry finish, thick mouthfeel - this is delicious! JohnC (2220), Mission Viejo, California, USA Mar 12, 2009 12oz bottle courtesy of alexsdad06
It says "Imperial Amber" on the bottle, but the flavor and aroma are clearly an IPA (IMO). The first thing that I noticed is that both the label on the neck and the label on the body of the bottle were put on crookedly.
Bronze in color with a one finger white head, it leaves nice lacing on the glass. the flavor is hoppy with a nice malty finish. It’s supposed to be 93ish IBU’s but it’s not a hop bomb/monster. the bitterness is very nice. This is a very nice beer SFLpunk (132), South Burlington, Vermont, USA Mar 11, 2009 22oz brown glass pry-top with no date. Picked this up on my recent trip to Wine Gallery Brookline (MA).
Appearance: A clear, medium brown with hints of red around the edges. The head is mostly white, recedes quickly, but leaves a little lacing.
Nose: Caramel malt, pine nettle, sweet grapefruit, and maybe fig?
Palate: Medium to light carbonation, medium bodied. There’s some round caramel malt sweetness up front, but the hop bitterness creeps right in and is prickly on the tongue. It’s a little boozy, but in a dry, prickly way, not a sweet way. Flavors are similar to the aromas, with sweet lemon on the midpalate, and very dry on the finish. The finish is dry and long, but focused on the dried leaves and pine needle notes.
Notes: This is a seriously tasty beer for the money. Glad to see it comes in affordable 6 packs. I could definitely see sessioning this for a least part of a night without getting sick of it. I just wonder with how dry the finish is, if it might dry my mouth out too much after two or three? Guess I’ll just have to find out sometime! danielcurtis81 (868), San Diego, California, USA Mar 11, 2009 Bomber. Nose is full of hoppiness. Pine resin most prominent with some good pineapple, sweet florals, and some melon. Pours a nice amber gold with a good inch of creamy off white head. Great hop flavors as well. Flavors follow the nose well, with some white peach and a hint of caramel too Mouth is full and has a good bitterness to it while still being very smooth. Not too much carbonation, almost flat. Pretty outstanding, up there with the greats! mrant (330), New York, USA Mar 11, 2009 Smells strongly of citrus hops. Pours a dark amber/copper color. Taste is wonderful creamy hops. Slightly sour, balanced well with nice malt finish bhensonb (4180), Woodland, California, USA Mar 9, 2009 Bottle from Josh who flew it in from Charlottesville. Lots of gratitude. Beautiful copper color with a multifinger beige head. Aromas of hop waft from a foot away. It’s resin. Oh yes. Medium plus body with creamy/frothy carbonation. Flavor is fresh, light pine. I’m sure there’s grapefruit rind as well. But the pine is strong enough to remind me of the old Wizard Wick air fresheners. Must be some malt in there, but who cares. OMG this is hoppy. But it’s not excruciatingly bitter in the finish. Or maybe it is. Damn this is immensely great stuff.
