Courtesy Santa. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a thin layer of off-white head. Great aroma of freshly-cut grapefruit rind, crushed flowers, and pepper. An inital taste gives a blast of bitter grapefruit and some backgound sweetness, with the finish having a smooth floral character. Great aroma on this one - would love to try on tap.

Pours amber orange with a finger of head that dies down pretty quick. Nice lacing and looks like a delicious amber/red ale. Smells of citrus, malt, pine, rind and HOPS. Wow, this is an amber/red right? Nothing pleases me more than to smell intense hops, regardless of the style. I have been instantly seduced. First taste is beautiful. The smell was not decieving, hops are there front and center but followed by the citrus and a sweet finish balancing it all perfectly. Tons of flavors, not just a hop bomb, but I do love these hops. Zero alcohol present. This is a delicious beverage. Finishes a little dry and bitter but its balaced out extremely nice. A 6 pack of this is trouble and would be a delight, a 12 would be my demise though I would not rule it out with the right circumstances. Overall an absolute must try.

This beer pours a slightly darker amber color. It has a white head that falls quickly. The aroma is overwhelmingly hoppy grapefruit. A very American hoppy aroma overall. The flavor is surprisingly smooth. There is very little hop bitterness compared to the aroma but a bunch of hop flavor mostly consisting of grapefruit flavors. The background is very smooth and the beer is very balanced overall. On a side note, how does get classified as an Imperial Amber instead of an Imperial IPA? I realize that it’s an amber, but I would easily fit into the Imperial IPA category.

Great aroma....just sniffing you can tell this is going to be one hop-filled beer. Mouthfeel is average, but taste is wonderful. Very strong citrus/pine flavor....whoever said Christmas Trees is spot on. Balanced well, not too over-the-top and at 7.5%, I could probably put away a 6-pack of these on a day of football watching.

Nice. Excellent orangey hops in the nose. It really tastes like citrus. I had a hard time drinking more than two of these, but the first two were amazing. THe mouthfeel is very astringent though.

Thanks to whomever gave me this when I moved to Ohio. After trying this I am going to have to track down a few more Troegs beers to see if all their beers are as good as this one. It is one of the better IPAs I’ve tried - somewhere between Hop Hearty and Two Hearted.

Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy orange body let through about a quarter of the light that tried to filter through. A thin lifeless head sat on top but was offset by the generous lacing. The scent of freshly cut Christmas trees and resin would make this perfect for a winter evening. Without being over the top it was aggressively hoppy. Somewhere hidden behind all of it was a nice caramel contrast.

Flavor / Palate - For an IPA it was nicely balanced. I picked up citrus flavors along with some pine. It was almost as if someone had made Orange Slice into a beer. The finish was bitter and intensified as the glass warmed. By the end it left a nice feeling across the throat. If I run across this again I may have to pick up another bottle or two.

12 oz. bottle, no freshness date, but I believe this is the 2006 winter release. Sampled in a pint glass. Poured an cloudy amber hued bright copper with rays of golden highlights, active micro bubbly carbonation. Compact head of white creamy foam, good retention and a fair amount of laced sticking. A quite promising start to this Imperial Amber Ale. A nice aromatic nose, the hops have held better than I thought they would. Hop aromas of grapefruit pulp and candied orange peel, hints of resiny pine needles. Lightly toasted caramelized malts, adding more refined sweetness to the smell. Crisp and smooth medium body that has a full, well rounded feel in the palate. Ample carbonation lends an underlining firmness to the mouthfeel. The caramelized sugary malts help add a delectable sweetness to the hop tastes. Slightly candied tastes of grapefruit, lemons and oranges, there is also an oily pine slickness on the tongue. Finishes dry and sweet, candied hops and caramel malts, mildly puckering and definitely leaving you wanting more. This is something I wished I had tried fresh, as soon as it was released, in order to get the full hop flavors. Another top notch brew from Tröegs, well worth trying.
