wj94 (64), Virginia, USA Dec 5, 2007 Great aroma....just sniffing you can tell this is going to be one hop-filled beer. Mouthfeel is average, but taste is wonderful. Very strong citrus/pine flavor....whoever said Christmas Trees is spot on. Balanced well, not too over-the-top and at 7.5%, I could probably put away a 6-pack of these on a day of football watching. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Dec 3, 2007 Nice. Excellent orangey hops in the nose. It really tastes like citrus. I had a hard time drinking more than two of these, but the first two were amazing. THe mouthfeel is very astringent though. Brigadier (1211), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Nov 29, 2007 12 oz bottle
Thanks to whomever gave me this when I moved to Ohio. After trying this I am going to have to track down a few more Troegs beers to see if all their beers are as good as this one. It is one of the better IPAs I’ve tried - somewhere between Hop Hearty and Two Hearted.
Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy orange body let through about a quarter of the light that tried to filter through. A thin lifeless head sat on top but was offset by the generous lacing. The scent of freshly cut Christmas trees and resin would make this perfect for a winter evening. Without being over the top it was aggressively hoppy. Somewhere hidden behind all of it was a nice caramel contrast.
Flavor / Palate - For an IPA it was nicely balanced. I picked up citrus flavors along with some pine. It was almost as if someone had made Orange Slice into a beer. The finish was bitter and intensified as the glass warmed. By the end it left a nice feeling across the throat. If I run across this again I may have to pick up another bottle or two. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Nov 23, 2007 12 oz. bottle, no freshness date, but I believe this is the 2006 winter release. Sampled in a pint glass.
Poured an cloudy amber hued bright copper with rays of golden highlights, active micro bubbly carbonation. Compact head of white creamy foam, good retention and a fair amount of laced sticking. A quite promising start to this Imperial Amber Ale.
A nice aromatic nose, the hops have held better than I thought they would. Hop aromas of grapefruit pulp and candied orange peel, hints of resiny pine needles. Lightly toasted caramelized malts, adding more refined sweetness to the smell.
Crisp and smooth medium body that has a full, well rounded feel in the palate. Ample carbonation lends an underlining firmness to the mouthfeel. The caramelized sugary malts help add a delectable sweetness to the hop tastes. Slightly candied tastes of grapefruit, lemons and oranges, there is also an oily pine slickness on the tongue. Finishes dry and sweet, candied hops and caramel malts, mildly puckering and definitely leaving you wanting more.
This is something I wished I had tried fresh, as soon as it was released, in order to get the full hop flavors. Another top notch brew from Tröegs, well worth trying.
KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Nov 3, 2007 Bottle from JB175. Amber color. Smell of hops, malt, grapefruit, orange zest, pepper, pine, caramel and some flowers. Tastes the same. Nice hop bitterness at the end. bitbucket (2024), Kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 30, 2007 Bottle provided by after4ever. Pours a hazy bright copper with a thin white head. Aroma of citrus, apricots, caramel. Medium body and soft carbonation. The taste is a nice balance between the malty caramel and the hoppy citrus. The finish is not nearly as bitter as many IPAs, but it dries out nicely. The main problem with this beer is that there are only 12 ounces of it available to me. Nephilium (541), Ohio, USA Oct 24, 2007 Nice subdued hop aroma, with a hint of caramel behind it. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a thin white head. Crisp taste of citrus, with a long bitter finish. A very tasty beer, and one I would like to get more of. yobdoog (1417), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Oct 11, 2007 Updated: Mar 3, 2008Extremely delicious. I wish I could get it year round. Last time I was at the brewery I was told they make more as a seasonal then they would if it was year round. Nice Hoppy aroma with some spices. Very tropical with lots of fruit. Some pine and citus hops with some malt balance. Creamy and delicous body. Would like to age some to see what happens to the hops. Awaiting the new release.
