Sweet roasted malt, nuts, toasted grains make up the nose. Taste is slighly roasty, with notes of caramel, chocolate, nuts, and a strange acidic tartness that tingles my tongue. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 31, 2004 Aroma is coffee and burned sugar. The look is well, uh - brown. Flavor gets much bolder as it warms, with a tobacco and honey backbone, and a hint of hop balance. Finish is unremarkable, with a bit of sourness. pjk33 (384), Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 21, 2004 Bottle. Rick brought this to the 2004 beer exchange. Nice root beer appearance with no head to speak of, but a nose of coffee, tea, and caramel. Maybe some tobacco in there as well. Nice mouthfeel and a smokey coffee like flavor with a roasted malt finish that stays sweet with a hint of bitter. Not tons of body, but medium and it fits the flavor of the beer. This one has to rank up there pretty well on my list of brown ales. Troegs is pretty solid and they have done it again with a nice beer here. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 9, 2004 I would call this a mahogany color, with a light white head that was very short lived. The aroma was about as exciting as the head, with light tones of chocolate and coffee. I thought the flavor and body were outstanding...has all the flavor and complexity of a stout, but only has the weight of a good lager. Nothing bad at all about the aftertaste, goes down smooth. Troegs brewing co. continues to impress me. JonR888710 (999), Cochabamba, Bolivia
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 8, 2004 Dark brown body with cherry tones when held to light. Rather thin looking and clear of any sediment or haze. Head is off-white and shortlived, leaves behind just a thin ring that lasts for the entire drink. Smells of chocolate malts, mixed nuts, cherries, and lightly of cappuccino. This bottle may be suffering from being a few months past its prime. Mouth feel is watery and on the thin side. Still packs a lot of flavor though with sweet chocolate malts and loads of roasted hops. In between is a slight cherry sourness. Hops aftertaste is a little harsh, metallic. Oddly enough, no nuts. Just reminds me a lot of cherry cola with some chocolate in it.
