Nice aroma of coffee and malt with possibly a touch of chocolate. Good coffee flavor with a bitter malt backbone and a slightly bitter finish. Aroma of chocolate, nuts and light spices. Tastes of nuts with chocolate undertones. Smells better than it tastes (I expected more after initially smelling the beer). | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 19, 2004 Updated: Aug 12, 2007Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a nice mahogany color with a small tan head. The aroma is a strong and pleasant scent of fruit and nut. The flavor is strongly of hazelnut with a moderate amount of smokyness. The smoke lingers on the aftertaste and was the factor that ended up turning me off to this beer. The draft version is much sweeter and has no smoke presence, but the nut is greatly reduced as well. Clearish, caramelly-brown color, with ruby tinges. Head is proper, solid, cocoa-tan in color.
Distinctly nutty aroma, creamy, with hints of cocoa and soft spices. A very pleasant meet and greet with the nose, with evidence of carbonation trickling in.
Smmooooth drinking, but not uncomplicated either: nice hoppiness, what there is, and big, tasty malt, very flavorful. Finish impressively lingers on the palate, never seeming to wish to quit the mouth. Fine by me. Taste is rich, full, body is medium, drinkability is supreme, and offers many rewards.
A happily finished brown, ..no, wait, there’s a few ounces left...Ah...

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 22, 2004 Pours a reddish brown with a fizzy light brown head that is quickly gone save for a thin collar that eventually fizzes out as well.
The aroma is malty, nutty, chocolate.
The taste is sweet malt up front (a little too sweet and kind of chemical tasting) with chocolate notes followed by a crisp nutty finish. It is medium to thin bodied with low carbonation, a little watery.
Overall, a somewhat uninspired brown ale. Thanks to Probiere for the trade! Drew (2408), Kent, Ohio, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 17, 2004 12oz. bottle: This one pours a nice brown color with a hint of red. A bit if a tan head. The aroma is quite nice: malty sweetness with a good nose of chocolate. The taste is fairly rich with flavors of chocolate and a hint of nuttiness. It is medium bodied. The hops are a bit lost but they balance the sweetness nicely. A good one!
