COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch Beer 1 - 2007, a hybrid beer (California Common Beer), will be released on or about April 26. This is a beer we brewed on the back patio on more than one occasion. It became the inspiration for Tröegs Pale Ale. The simplest explanation of what makes a hybrid beer unique is the brewer is forcing a lager to do something it doesn’t want to do. Scratch 1 uses lager yeast fermented at a warmer temperature. The fermented malt gives an exaggerated fruity undertone to the beer which combines nicely with the citrus flavors of Cascade hops. Balancing out the taste are spicy, earthy flavors derived from Brewer’s Gold hops. Slightly aggressive hops in the front of the mouth give way to a clean, subtle grape-like finish.

Appearance: Pours a faintly hazy, light yellow body with a small white head. Smell: Scents of citrus, crumpled crackers, and wood. Taste: Brief sweet pale maltiness alongside a continuous, though sensibly subtle citrus taste. Finishes with a lingering, woody bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, little summertime beer. I feel richer for having tried it!

Bottle thanks to MrBendo: Pours a transparent pale golden with a thin, spotty-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh, wet, lightly citrusy hops and some mild pale malt sweetness along with light fruity esters. Body starts with a nice, light sweetness and fresh light flavor hoppy character toward a crisp, clean finish. Very drinkable and true to style.

12 oz bottle from Somed vis GandGKevin - thanks to both of you! Clear yellow gold with a pure white head. Lightly citrus nose, tangerine and light white grapefruit. Thick, white, clumpy lace. Dry citrusy flavors, a tad perfumey, traces of dried tropical fruits. Clean, dry, lightly citrus bitter finish. Pretty damn nice summer beer!

Bottle... Yellow lager with a small, creamy, white head. Spicy, white and black pepper nose. The balanced flavor yields pale grains, mild bitterness and light acidity along with a perfumey, lemon peel essence. Light to medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Finishes crisp and mostly clean. Not really a fan of this style, but thanks to mgumby10 for sharing the bottle!

Translucent straw colored body, medium sized white head with modest retention. The nose is comprised of very fresh citric hops(wet-hopped notes), spicy yeast in moderation, light toasted grains, faint flowers, toffee and bread dough. The flavor is very exciting for such a typically uninteresting style. Hoppy bitterness is mild to moderate and extremely pleasing and well integrated into a soft malt base. Sweetness is low, though it adequately offsets bitterness and blends well with peppery spice from yeast and light alcohol notes. Astringency is low, pleasing also. Floral notes so subdued in the aroma are still light but very expressive in the taste, complex. The finish is medium-dry, crisp and bready, light hops lingering. Mouthfeel is light bodied, well carbonated and very smooth. This is easily the best California Common I’ve encountered, hard proof that even the most bland styles always have room for improvement. This particular example makes that step toward perfection with skill and grace. Very, very drinkable and pretty satisfying.

From Secret Santa!! Pours a clear, straw gold, with a small white head. smells a little grainy, but nothing really offensive. had a nice little lemon citrus aroma too. The taste is a little bit spicy, definitely some sweet cinnamon in there, along with some grainy citrus. This was my first impression of this style, and i’m pretty pleased actually. Easy drinking and pretty refreshing. Nice job.

Lighter golden color with a small white head. Aroma is a bit earthy with some light hops, grain, and maybe some light non-ripened fruit. Flavor has a lot of raw grain with some earthy hops, some light fruit. Not all that exciting, but good for the style. Refreshing summer beer.
