COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return.

Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches.

O.G.: 13 Plato
I.B.U.’s: 48
Malt: Dark Crystal, Roasted Barley, Extra Special Malt
Yeast: Thames Valley Ale
Hops: East Kent Goldings, Willamette, Chinook

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2012 Beautiful red color that invited me in. Superb flowery hop. Rolls into the tongue. Smooth finish.

Reddish amber. Big perfumy hop aroma. Medium bodied. Intensly hoppy, citrusy aromatic finish.

Big fluffy head. Nice fresh hop aroma. A bit sweet on the front of the palate. The middle and the finish round out the beer well.

Dark amber; earthy hop nose; all about the Goldings - highly original stuff here, if I had just walked out of the biosphere following a twenty-year stint. Every brewer in Ontario makes this beer.

Big head, amber hued, huge nose. My favorite from Troegs! I’ll have another.

expensive, but worth it. Everything in the Troegs line is worth it.

Great beer! Pine/caramel aroma suggests a nice balance between the hops and malts. The flavor backs it up -- nice hoppiness backed by good malts. The beer is copper colored with minimal head.

Sweet, hoppy aroma with a flavor that lives up to it. A biting, but not too bitter, hop start (which I thoroughly enjoy) and a sweet, mildly grapefruity finish. Rivals Sierra Nevada Pale Ale as the beer that I would want to always have on hand.

Nice balance, dark color, good head, rich flavor, certainly on the bitter side, would like to taste this on draft

Another fine beer from Troegs. A very well balanced ESB. This brewery is up & coming and I hope more people discover their great beers.
