Since the inception of our Scratch Beer series, some of the most heralded releases have been IPAs. Easily one of the most popular beer styles among craft beer drinkers, the IPA (India Pale Ale) has roots stretching back as far as the mid-19th century. Touted as a stronger, highly hopped version of a classic English Pale Ale, the style has mutated over the years, becoming arguably the benchmark beer style of the American craft beer movement. Until recently, IPAs have typically weighed in at around 6% ABV. However, with the advent of the “session IPA,” hopheads can still enjoy all of the aroma and flavor that have long since become hallmarks of the style without having to stop drinking after two or three. Aaaah, the session beer. What a beautiful invention!

Growler from the Brewery, filled August 14, my birthday. HB to me. This growler held this beer totally fresh for almost 3 months. Great hop aroma when opened, nice sudsy pour. Everyone is doing a session IPA these days, and I am very thankful for it. Hopefully the session IPA will one day take the place of a Bud. At least in a perfect world. But I digress. I have had hoppier, more bitter session IPAs which I prefer, but this one does have a nice balance of forward hops, but not bitter. Very full of flavor. Please bottle this, Troegs brothers!

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden. I thought I missed this one, glad I could try it during the Scratch Beer throw down.

A - Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a small half finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty lace down the glass.

S - Smells of dulled citric fruit zest, grassy hops, pine resin and light caramel malt sweetness. A little dull initially but it does get a little better as it warms up.

T - Starts off with some grassy hop bite quickly giving way to hints of pine, orange zest, some caramel sweetness and a bit of chewy malt. Finish is sweet with some light hop bitterness, not lingering on the palate for very long.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet grain and mild hop bitterness dominate the feel.

O - A decent enough session IPA. It has some nice flavors going for it but it isn’t anything over the top. Glad I was able to finally try it after missing it initially. I would usually say you should give it a try but I doubt there are many kegs floating around at this point.

Pours a golden brown with a thick foamy tan head. Aroma is bready and yeasty. Taste is lightly sweet followed by a slight bitterness light for an IPA. The finish is grainy and nutty. Very drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
