COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch #139 represents our interpretation of the classic Belgian-style ale – the Saison. This once near-extinct ale was brewed in farmhouses during the winter months, then stored until the summer when it was served to the farmers, or seasonal workers (“saison” is French for “season”). Keeping with a French theme, we use a strain of French Saison yeast to enhance the mouthfeel, which lends a rich, silky texture and dry, champagne-like finish. The result is a mouthwatering, generously carbonated Saison with a tangy citrus character, sweet malt backbone, and contrasting peppery spiciness. À la vôtre!

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours murky light amber orange with a nice one finger tall white head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving no lace at all on the glass.

S - Smells of bready wheat, pale malts, mild spice from the French yeast, some honey sweetness and a dash of earthy hops. Solid nose, I prefer them with a bit more funk but it’s still pretty nice.

T - Starts off with some of the spiciness followed quickly by the chewy wheat, earthy hop bitterness, lightly toasted pale malts and a bit of drying booze. Finish is a little spicy with some light dryness, not lingering overly long.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, spicy feel with a bit of dryness thrown in.

O - A decent enough saison. Not really sure why they called this one a Belgian saison when they used the French yeast. Either way I had no trouble finishing my glass and I would definitely get another.

Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a nice orange color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over about 3 minutes to leave a trace of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The smell of the brew is sweet and delicious. It has a quite strong aroma of candied sugar and banana as well as some lighter tangerine and light fruit aromas of peach and apricot. Along with these sweet aromas are some nice light spice aromas of clove and black pepper as well as a bit of grass and some hay. Overall the aroma is very inviting. Taste – The taste begins as would be anticipated from the smell, with a sweet flavor of candied sugar and some lighter fruit flavors of orange and apricot. Some very light pepper flavors are present from the start with these later being joined by some flavors of a very light clove and coriander spice. During the increase in spice, some yeasty and a rather strong banana flavor develop on the tongue. Toward the end, a light grassy and hay-like flavor develop, leaving a nice sweet but very easy going and enjoyable saison flavor to sit on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation that is a bit on the higher side. The higher carbonation suits the sweet candied sugar and lighter yeasty and grassy flavors quite well making this a rather good mouthfeel overall. Overall – This was a quite tasty Belgian season. I would certainly like to see this become a regular option by Troeg’s. Quite delicious.

Bottle from Troegs swag room. Pours golden with a thin white head. Leaves a good amount of lacing. Has a bit of a Belgian yeast thing on the nose. Definitely get some peppery vibes as well as some of the barnyard. Finishes clean. It’s better behaved than the saisons I usually go for but quaffable nonetheless.
