COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch #14-2008 is our interpretation of a farmhouse ale—a once near-extinct winter-brewed (and summer–imbibed) Belgian ale. celebratory brew starts with a black pepper and ginger nose. The nicely carbonated brew releases a honey-malt flavor that gives way to a tart crisp finish that masks the elevated ABV. We use a blended yeast strain (Saison Dupont & Le Chouffe) to create the traditional peppery, spicy earthy flavors of the saison. Slight hints of ginger also come through in the finish. Drink it ‘til the wedding bells chime!

O.G.: 15.4 Plato
I.B.U.’s: 25
Malt: Pils, Munich, Vienna
Yeast: Belgian/Saison Blend
Juju: Ginger
Hops: English Pilgrim, Saaz

12oz bottle thanks to vwcraig, much appreciated. Nice cloudy orange color, good head. The smell is a nice spicy saison-like smell. It tastes like dull oranges, spice, pepper, good saison. Not as easy to drink as I expected but still a good saison overall. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-19-2008 04:04:49

12oz bottle I recieved as an extra in a trade recetly. Poured a murky golden color with a thin white head. Tastes of banana and spices are very much present. Great beer, I wish I had more.

beautiful cloudy golden color with a huge white head and thick lacing. very aromatic with ginger, banana, and black pepper. excellent flavor with pepper and ginger up front, then a touch of clove, and ending in a crisp dry lightly hoppy finish with coriander notes. i definitely wish they would make more of this beer!

Bottle: Poured a golden yellow with a nice white head. The aroma was spicy, pepper, yeast and orange present. The flavor was tasty, with the spices and pepper hitting first then the yeast and finishing smooth with coriander. Overall, if they produced more of this I would not complain. Thank You Troegs.

I Bottle poured into a Snifter produced a good two fingers worth of white fluffy head that seems to last. The body was a cloudy golden yellow on this brew Aromas of yeast and spice filled my head. The yeast aroma is a weird Belgian, Hefe blend really very interesting. The spices help out with this smelling some clove, pepper and coriander The flavors very much mimic the nose on this one. The mouthfeel is nice light and crisp, great carbonation in this brew as well Very drinkable, I am really enjoying this brew on this cold snowy winter day

Bottled. Decent pour, great color, with a wimpy head. Aroma is unmistakably Belgian. With these Troegs beers, I tend to not look them up before drinking and attempt to identify the style. Also helps with not being biased. I wouldn’t have called this one a saison, probably just a Belgian Strong Ale, though perhaps after a bit of reflection it could be the case. Still, there is not much difference between this and something like Duvel except strength (and size of head ;), though this one tastes a lot stronger than it is. Some sweet, residual malts stick around, and there is a harsh carbonation to this. Fairly enjoyable.

Bottle. Aroma of banana-clove-bubblegum combo, doughy malt, sprightly citrus (light orange, more lemon), dank, wet-grass hops. Flavor has many of the citrus notes, quite sweet, with a hop balance that increases to the point that the finish is earthy, and lightly bitter. More than an admirable effort for an American saison.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy light yellow with a thick white head. Aroma of funk, yeast, clove. Kind of reminds me of Hennepin in the nose. Flavor is loaded with peppery spices and yeast. Extremely quaffable. Excellent saison. 7/4/8/4/15 (3.8/5)
