COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch #14-2008 is our interpretation of a farmhouse ale—a once near-extinct winter-brewed (and summer–imbibed) Belgian ale. celebratory brew starts with a black pepper and ginger nose. The nicely carbonated brew releases a honey-malt flavor that gives way to a tart crisp finish that masks the elevated ABV. We use a blended yeast strain (Saison Dupont & Le Chouffe) to create the traditional peppery, spicy earthy flavors of the saison. Slight hints of ginger also come through in the finish. Drink it ‘til the wedding bells chime!

O.G.: 15.4 Plato
I.B.U.’s: 25
Malt: Pils, Munich, Vienna
Yeast: Belgian/Saison Blend
Juju: Ginger
Hops: English Pilgrim, Saaz

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours very turbid gold with 1-finger white head. Nose is beautiful...a medley of heavy floral hops, spicy citrus, funky yeasty notes, and slightly tart apricotty fruit. Tastes dry, floral, citric, with hops, yeasty spice, and mild funky notes. The nose is better than the flavor or palate, and this one is very, very good for a domestic saison. Put this one on steroids and it could become as good as Scratch 4, and could become a world class saison.

This was a pretty good version of a saison, I had it on tap in the brewery tasting room, just bottled today! The beer poured a nice straw color and had some cloudiness, not much of a head. The beer has a nice fruity/spicy aroma. The flavor is very clean for a saison, the spiciness is there but I find it is fairly subdued, there are hints of coriander and some banana phenolics that come through. A very solid saison, but where I find this beer lacking is with mouthfeel, it is almost watery. I think if they brew it again they should improve on that a little. Overall, I enjoyed it.
