COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch #16-2008 combines the bitterness of two aroma hops, the lush sweetness of honey and malt and an earthly yeast taste creating a Winter Warmer designed to ward off the coldest days. The dark, rich amber color comes from a combination of molasses and crystal malts; the Thames Valley brings a distinct earthly flavor; white the blend of hops creates fruity (Amarillo) and piney (Cluster) bitterness. The Winter Warmer ends with a slight warming sensation from the elevated alcohol content. Enjoy this one throughout the winter months.

Beer from educators’ BIF. Pours dark amber with minimal white head. Nose is malt, maple, dark fruit, and some booze. Flavor is dry maple, malt, sweetness, but hops. Overall, an unremarkable ale.

Courtesy of markwise. The pour is clear copper with thin off white head. The aroma has notes of prunes, dirty figs, dried cherries, some brighter fruit notes, brown sugar and a decent alcohol sense. The taste is smooth and understated with malts, floral hops and shriveled dark fruitiness.

12 oz bottle thanks to machfive55. Pours a red-brown color with a medium beige head. The aroma is toasted malts, light hops, and some nutty notes. The flavor is nice; initial Amarillo hops, caramel, light toasted malts, light fruit and nuts. Easygoing but full flavored. Overall, a nice brew.

machfive55 is the Troegs man! A bit of an odd beer. Light amber pour. Malt, cider, roast, and some plastic aroma leads to an odd flavor that seems to be some type of artificial something. The hops don’t meld well. The malt bill is ok. I didn’t have much fun with this one.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2009 12oz bottle courtesy of CrazyMacHarris99 poured into a tulip. Pours a clear copper with a small cream-colored head that recedes to a big, bubbly collar and leaves decent lacing. The aroma is musty with some earthy hops and a caramel malt sweetness. It’s pretty tame but not too bad in the nose. The taste is fairly light with a bit of hop bitterness up front. There is some caramel malt and sugary sweetness with a hint of chocolate as well. There is a bitterness that lingers in the finish but without the hop flavors I was expecting. The mouthfeel is a bit thin with average carbonation and fairly dry in the finish. This is a pretty nondescript winter warmer that has a tame mix of hops and caramel malts without bringing anything too interesting to the table. Pretty good.

Bottle. Pours a mahogany amber brown body with a thin tan head. Sweet chewy malt aroma with a hint of apple. Light earth and pine. Molasses roasty coffee hints a light note of honey. Finish is dry and very english like. It’s slightly reminiscent of a sammy smith brew but i cant put my finger on which one.
