Scratch 27 begins a new fold in the Scratch series. For the next several batches individual Troegs brewers will create recipes of their choice. First up, The Ticeman had a hankering for a sweet stout, so the Troegs brothers and all the brewers met with Scharffen Berger Chocolate Company engineers to eat ridiculous amounts of cocoa nibs and chocolates over a few pints of beer. This collaboration resulted in the delivery of a special blend of cocoa nibs that were added during the boiling process. In addition to the nibs, lactose was added at the end of the boil to give a little sweetness in the body. The addition of Galena and Simcoe hops lends a subtle fruity balance. After primary fermentation, the beer was aged for three weeks on a blend of cocoa nibs and Ugandan vanilla beans. Dubbed Cocaoabunga, this unfiltered beer has a pleasant cocoa aroma, a subtle sweetness in the mouthfeel, a full-bodied flavor, and hints of vanilla. Enjoy!

Backlog of ratings. Thanks to someone at one of bu11zeye’s tastings. The smell is roast, malts, toast, chocolate, and coffee. The look is brown in color with a beige colored head. Clear. The taste is malts, toast, chocolate, and roast.

Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Deep brown with a decent sized beige head. Aroma is of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is the same.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a slight tan head that collars around the glass. Rich, dark chocolate aroma in the nose. Medium/heavy mouthfeel. Velvety and smooth. Starts with a nice chocolate note and slowly transitions to a dark bittersweet chocolate flavor with slight bitterness. Overall, this is a pretty tasty stout.

Pours something between brown and black with a thick, creamy tan head. Smells a bit musty/oxidized like a 10yr old quad, cocoa, roast. Flavors follow suit, but with much more roast and then cocoa coming through. Some dark fruits and bread seem evident in the middle. Cocoa coats the palate on the finish, appearing quite strong. Feels good on the palate.

Originally reviewed: 12/2/10. Pours a dark murky black with a thin tan sheet of lace on the top. Faint globs stay behind after sips. The nose is full of fresh chocolate, espresso, cream, and roasted malts and nuts. Very sweet smelling. A nice mellow coating of the palate with this beer. Carbonation is there but takes a back seat to smoothness. Flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla, and a nutty finish. This is more roasted than I’d have thought too, but all-in-all, this is a really good stout. An easy drinker.

12 oz. bottle, and damn if I can’t remember the origin. Sorry, but thanks, whoever bonused this to me. Pours a dark, opaque coffee brown with a small tan head that dissipates quickly into a thin, uneven film and ring with light lace. Aroma shows some oxidation instantly, along with notes of toasted sugar, roasted malts, milk chocolate, lactose, vanilla, and cocoa powder. Flavor of roasted malts, toasted sugar, molasses, cocoa powder, earth, and bittersweet dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a sweet, slightly roasty mouthfeel. Wonder if this would have been even better when fresher. Pretty nice.

In short: A sweet vanilla black cake in a bottle. Just ok.

The look: Translucent black body topped by a very small tan head
In long: Nose is commercial black cake with some phenols notes. Taste has soft oatmeal-like malts, plenty of vanilla extract, black cake, milk chocolate, caramel. Very limited hops presence. Body is a bit slimy, carbonation is medium. Sweet vanilla after-taste. Nothing really offensive in this beer, but one little 12oz was more than enough. Anyway I didn’t care for this beer and if you’re not happy with my comments please feel free to write your complaints in the space reserved to that effect -> [ ]

This one is over a year old now yet I remember the day it was released like it was yesterday. Bottle poured into a pint glass. A - Pours pitch black with a creamy one finger tall off white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving light lacing down the glass. S - Smells of dulled chocolate, lactic sweetness, dark roasted malts, vanilla, and some toffee. Pretty sweet but not too over the top. Silky smooth even after a year plus in the bottle. The chocolate seems to have dulled out a bit but there is still plenty there. T - Flavors are very similar to the nose, with a bit more chocolate coming thru. The sweetness is strong but it never really overpowers the pallet, allowing you to taste all the supporting flavors. It is silky smooth on the pallet with some lingering sweet roast in the finish. Even after a year in the bottle this remains one of the best scratch beers I have ever had. I just wish I would have picked up a case of this when I had the chance. M - Heavy body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Nice soft, velvety, feel with plenty of lingering sweet roast in the finish. O - One of my all time favorite scratch beers. The cask version of this remains the best cask beer I have ever had. I really wish I would have been reviewing back then. Even after a year now this one remains very highly drinkable.

The beer pours dark black with a big huge creamy tan head. The aroma is light sweet, definitely notes of the lactose even over a year old, but unfortunately no hops with this aging on the beer. The flavor is the same, light sweet creamy notes, but the body creamy and smooth, but not too big and probably dissipated over the last year.

Tap as Scratch 41, CK. Nearly black with no head. Light roast, metal, chocolate, and some sweetness in the aroma. Loads of chocolate in the flavor, and makes up for its lack of presence in the aroma. Not overly sweet, but missing some roastiness, and a dry dark chocolate finish with some malted milk. Medium, silkier body.
