COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch Beer Series - #29 O.G.: 16.8 Plato Alcohol by Volume: 7.7% Hop Bitterness (IBU’s): 80 Malt: Pilsner Yeast: Westmalle Hops: Bravo, German Northern Brewer Codename: NBPA JuJu: Cane Sugar Incredibly-hopped, lovingly-aged, and ravenously-carbonated, Scratch #29-2010 is a true brewery collaboration with cast of characters involved in recipe formulation, barrel-aging, dry-hopping, bottle-conditioning and finally, taste-testing. Scratch #29 started off innocently enough as a Pale Ale fermented with Westmalle yeast. After fermentation, the beer was aged for twelve days in virgin Pennsylvania Oak barrels supplied by Keystone Coopers. And then the fun began. Even after brief wood-aging the oak’s intensity overwhelmed the Bravo and German Northern Brewer hops used in the boil. But have no fear, a two-week dry-hop with Willamette and Hersbrucker hops dulled the oak and transformed this beer. Bottled-conditioned for three weeks before release, Scratch #29 imparts an intense spicy flavor with grassy notes from the Hersbrucker hops. Hints of orange and a slight alcohol burn come through with the high carbonation leaving “pins on your tongue” in the finish. * (Not Belgian Pale Ale. We are not Belgian, nor do we claim to be.)

A: The pour is a hazy straw yellow color with a nice, big white head. S: Lots of yeast character is noticeable right away. A fair amount of spice, primarily coriander, along with some nice floral notes and a good grapefruit and grass hop aroma. T: The hops are not all that pungent, mostly grassy with a little bit of citrus rind and maybe a hint of pine. Lots of Belgian yeast esters and spice flavors, though. M: The body is light-medium with a lively carbonation. D: This sort of reminded me of one of the Bruery’s pilot batches of Mischief. A good beer, but with a little tweaking, I think the recipe could be very nice.

Stealth sample at Frank Smith Beerapalooza 2010. Pours turbid gold with clingy white head. Nose is pale malt, funky yeast, hopcitrus. Tastes smooth, complex, with a nice Belgoan candi sugary malt matched by a solid hop backed citric profile. Very well done, and I think we may have discovered Troeg’s next regular offering, which I hope they call Candy Samples (and I applaud those who get the inside joke there).

Bottled as "Belgian Style IPA". Poured hazy straw golden with lively rising carbonation and a sticky cap of white head. The aroma picked up peppery clove and sweet banana notes with backing of vanilla and bready character.. fresh earth and floral notes emerged as it warmed up, with catty hops and oak right on the back.. there was A LOT going on here, and I dug it. The flavor found a lot more of the same.. lightly sour lemon rind, orange zest, and oak opened, with banana sweetness settling onto the core.. very assertive spicy yeast, floral and catty bitterness, plus alcohol warmth on the back end and through the finish.. fresh hops and bright yeast left a long impression. Medium-bodied and very well carbonated on the palate.. assertive and engaging with a whole bunch of different stuff coming together well. I’ll gladly have another!

hazy golden, white head. hoppy with Belgian yeast nose, some citrus bitterness. flavors, keep a yeasty approach with a hop spicy finish, thick palate, peppery citrus hops and a tad of caramel malts to top it off. Not bad, IPA’ish with plenty of Belgian yeasty flavors to go about.

Bottle shared by Shane, thanks! Poured a hazy gold with a white head that lasted throughout the beer and laced a bit. The nose was full of nice citrus hops. While one note, the aroma was nice. The flavor had the same nice citrus note throughout with a bit of a sweet bread and cereal backbone.
