COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For the third scratch beer, we delved into our old Belgian notes and decided to go big for a nice warming feeling when you drink this beer,” says John Trogner. “This unfiltered golden ale is 10.1% abv. It is spicy and quite dry with a hint of noble hops. The yeast is the real flavor in this beer and we used a different yeast strain than we use for The Mad Elf. This yeast creates that drier taste.

Pours a hazy golden with a ton of floaties all over...head was medium, bubbly white left some lacing. Aroma of yeast, citrus, various Belgian spicey esters, some bready pilsner type malts. Flavors of yeast, kind of a malty sweetness, on the dry side with a mix of spices and citrus also earthy with a bit of pepper.

12oz. Bottle: Sweet aroma. Smells of spices, coriander, yeast, floral hops, and peach. Poured yellow/gold in color with a small white head that diminished. Cloudy. Lots of tiny particles. Sparkling. Lightly bitter, very earthy flavor. Tastes of horse blanket, grass, black pepper, and yeast. I really do not like the flavor. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Barnyard-tasting finish. Overall, I don’t like this one.

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Hazy pour white head. The aroma was spice and bread. The taste sort of reminded me of a wheat beer. It was pretty good.

12 oz bottle. Cloudy yellow with tons of tiny floaters. Slim white head leaves a lacy ring. Light butterscotch, yeast and apricot. Taste is lemon-orange creamsicle with tangy club soda carb. Mild pith, honey and bread to finish.

Bottle sampled. Pours hazy golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of belgian spices, fruit, citrus, and yeast. The flavor is smooth, spices, fruit, banana, citrus, with a mild bitterness. Really smooth, good brew.

Drank right from the brewery. It was a bit to cold so most of the flavors were hidden. It poured a dark yellow with a slight haze. Tasted like Belgian yeast and spices. Finished smooth with a slight heat and warming sensation.

Cloudy yellow, with a white head. Aroma is spices, mostly pepper, banana, and yeast. Flavor is citrus, yeast, spices, and sugar. Dry finish. Glad Troeg’s is experimenting. Bottle, from Capone’s.

This was a great Triple. I got to drink it at the brewery while talking to John Trogner, and hear all about the inspiration and brewing of this beer. I had myself just picked up some belgian ingrediants at the homebrew shop before stopping in. Beer poured with a firm head, and was bright with highlights of yellow and orange. Spiciness seeped out of the aroma with some clove character as well as some hints of malt. Flavor is great, can’t taste that 10.1% which is a bit scary, very dry and extreamly drinkable with a hint of noble hops, and lovely spicy flavors, and just a hint of honey in the background of a firm malty base. Lovely mouth coating medium palate. One of my favorite Tripels. Hope more people get to try it

12oz bottle from Capone’s (Norristown, PA); and on tap at BCTC 2007. Pours cloudy pale golden, with an ample white head. Floral, citrus aroma with some peppery spice and hops. Yeast and sugar flavor at first, joined by hops, tropical fruit, and spice towards the finish. Very drinkable for the alcohol content. Really nice effort from the brothers Trogner; my favorite of the Scratch offerings thus far.
