For the third scratch beer, we delved into our old Belgian notes and decided to go big for a nice warming feeling when you drink this beer,” says John Trogner. “This unfiltered golden ale is 10.1% abv. It is spicy and quite dry with a hint of noble hops. The yeast is the real flavor in this beer and we used a different yeast strain than we use for The Mad Elf. This yeast creates that drier taste.

This was a great Triple. I got to drink it at the brewery while talking to John Trogner, and hear all about the inspiration and brewing of this beer. I had myself just picked up some belgian ingrediants at the homebrew shop before stopping in. Beer poured with a firm head, and was bright with highlights of yellow and orange. Spiciness seeped out of the aroma with some clove character as well as some hints of malt. Flavor is great, can’t taste that 10.1% which is a bit scary, very dry and extreamly drinkable with a hint of noble hops, and lovely spicy flavors, and just a hint of honey in the background of a firm malty base. Lovely mouth coating medium palate. One of my favorite Tripels. Hope more people get to try it

12oz bottle from Capone’s (Norristown, PA); and on tap at BCTC 2007. Pours cloudy pale golden, with an ample white head. Floral, citrus aroma with some peppery spice and hops. Yeast and sugar flavor at first, joined by hops, tropical fruit, and spice towards the finish. Very drinkable for the alcohol content. Really nice effort from the brothers Trogner; my favorite of the Scratch offerings thus far.

Bottle from Capone’s. Turbid deep goldish canary color with 2-finger off-white head and some floaties. The aroma was floral and spicy, with bready candi sugary malt, Saazy hops, and quite a bit of apricotty and peachy fruit notes. The flavor was on the candi sugary sweet side, even a bit cloying at first, with a lot of candi sugary malts, honey, peach, pear, and mid-palate floral and spicy notes. This is a solidly complex tripel that I enjoyed a lot.

12oz bottle. Poured a lighter and cloudy yellow color with a smaller sized head. Lots of floaters. Aromas of spices, yeast, citrus, and fruity. Tastes of spices (though not as strong or in the forefront as the aromas), vanilla, fruity and had a candi sugar sweetness to it (but not overly sweet). Medium alcohol finish (but I would not guess 10+%).

Draft. Deep yellow coloring. Sweet, lemon mustard. Spicy. Alcohol content very present but not overwhelming. Worth a second look but pales next to most Tripels. Sampled @ BCTC 2007

i thought this was a good tripes considering how smooth it was yet it was about 10%. Has a bit of a cloudy yellowish colour, not much of an aroma, maybe sweet malt to it, taste was a bit of sweet malts with a bit of spice, not anything too prevelant, but it was very smooth and easy drinking.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2007 [BCTC 07] Draft - Poured a cloudy golden (much lighter than the new batch of Naked Elf) color, with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of Belgian spices, citrus fruits, dry yeast, a touch of earth, and toasted dough. Taste was honey up front, with toffee malts, cardamom, coriander, light black pepper, and a bit of alcohol in the finish. Light bodied, but somewhat bland.

On tap @ BCTC. One of the better tripels I had here. Cloudy gold, spicy & fruity aroma. Medium bodied & smooth. Very good
