COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch 31, the brothers and the brewers decided to revisit one of our favorite sweet spots – IPA – and have some fun with hop flavors. Dubbed ‘Citra of Brotherly Love’ in honor of Philly Beer week, Scratch #31 has generous amounts of Apollo, Cascade and Citra hops. This is our first use of Citra hops, which is known for an intense grapefruit aroma and flavor.

While showcasing the intense Citra flavor we added additional bitterness with Apollo and Chinook hops as well. Scratch #31 went through a bed of Chinook hops in the hopback and was dry-hopped with Cascade and Citra hops.

Scratch #31 will be showcased at events throughout Philly Beer Week. Also, be on the lookout for Scratch #31 in firkins and pins, which were aged in new wine barrels for about a week before kegging.

Strangest issue, this comes across on taste and smell as a soft cheese. It’s smooth like a cask ale when drinking from a bottle pour. Lighter than most of the IPAs I prefer in color, as is the kick. WIth the "new" hop they are using still doesn’t give me a need to drink more of this... unique, yes, long term favorite... no.

Backlog of ratings. Thanks to someone at one of bu11zeye’s tastings. The look is clear, golden in color, and has a whitish head. The smell is hops, peppers, and spice. The taste is hops, bitterness, and pepper.

Strong citrus hop aroma with a carbonic sweetness. Amber peach hazy color with a small head. Flavor is sweeter than bitter, but the bitter does come on at the end. Caramel and delicious. Thick body. Tasty.

Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Golden in color with a decent sized off-white head. Aroma is of grapefruit, pine and grass. Taste is of grapefruit, resinous, pine and light herbal notes.

Originally reviewed: 10/15/10. 12oz bottle poured into a conical pint glass. Pours a very cloudy dark orange with a large foamy off-white head on top. Excellent retention on this one. Leaves lots of sticky globs of lace behind. I imagine the nose on this one fresh was standout, but it has since faded, I’m afraid. There’s still some minor citrus tones, but it’s not as powerful as I can only imagine it was. Orange zest, and lemon faintly. The mouth still retains a firm feel. Carbonation level is good for the style. Not too much, but enough to keep it lively. This is actually a pretty filling beer. The hops have definitely taken a hit in the freshness dept, but this is still pretty good. I’m getting lots of sweet tangerine, mango, and orange. Sweet finish. Bitterness is pretty low now. I think this beer would have been stellar fresh, still though, however many months later this is, this is still a really good beer.

In short: A fruity and grassy blonde IPA. Decent beer
How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed probably not fresh enough, almost one year after the beer release. Bottle from a BA buddy, thanks a lot Heath
The look: Cloudy orange-blonde body topped by a small white head
In long: Nose is mostly fruity with apricots, pineapples and oranges. The fruity aroma seemed to be a combination of both yeast fruity esters and fruity hops. Taste has a chewy body with yeast and pale malts reminiscent of cookie dough. This is complemented by all the fruits I got in the aroma (apricots, pineapples and oranges) with the addition of bitter grapefruits. Bitterness level is medium and a bit sharp with a bit of lemony acidity showing up in the finish. Overall a pleasant but unspectacular IPA, probably a bit too old when I had it. Did you guys notice that there was no Scratch 26? Really. The American economy is really going down the shitter when a brewery has to lay-off a beer.

Had a bottle about a year past bottling, but it is still decent. It pours amber in color with with a white head. The flavor is a mixture of the delicious hops that managed to stick around with the maltiness that comes with the aging in this style. There is still some delicious juicy citra hop notes that give flavors of grapefruit on the palate, so good.

Citrus nose with some caramel, but it’s all relatively light. The taste is moderately sweet, with a light to moderate bitterness. The flavor is of cotton candy and honey sweetness, with grapefruit and apricot hops.

Bottle thanks to Jason. Nice clear orange pour, white head. Aroma has notes of some butter, peppery hops, and some caramel. Sweet caramel, orange and pine up front, some butterscotch and pine, finishing dry and slightly bitter. Nice brew, wish it was fresh but was still good!

Thanks Jason. Pours to a shiny golden body with a thin white head. The aroma is bitter pine and grapefruit. The flavor is very nice. Pine, grapefruit, balanced with malt, and lots of hoppy nuance. The palate is bitter but balanced.

Bottled. Poured translucent medium golden with a short-lived off-white head. The aroma picked up sweeter caramel and fruity malts with aged peppery and fruity hops.. well-balanced, but a little old. The flavor found spicier and more aggressive hops through the palate (pine and citrus) over pale and some bready malts.. dried out on the finish. Light-medium bodied with lower carbonation on the palate.. felt good on the palate.. I’d love to try a fresh batch.
