12oz bottle. Pours a clear golden orange with a creamy white head that recedes to a thin collar with no lacing. The aroma has a crisp herbal hop presence up front with some toasted bread and light caramel malts. The taste has a big herbal, grassy hop kick up front. The biscuity malts form a solid backbone and there are some fruity notes in the finish with a bitterness that lingers for a while. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp, clean and dry in the finish. This is a solid hop-forward steam bitter that drinks very easy.

Bottle shared by Shane, thanks! Poured a clear gold with a white head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma was full of sweet grains and cereal with a bit of yeast. Flavor was similar with sweet grain and cereal but had an off-putting buttery popcorn finish.

Gold with white head and lace. Paper and perfume and some sweet malt aromas. Flavor mirrors aroma. Medium bodied with good carbonation.

355mL from the Troegs Tasting Room. Pours a clear, yellow/gold with a small, bright white head. Decent spotty lace. Aroma is coconut, pineapple, fresh orange juice, fruit punch. Taste is orange juice, but moves quickly to sharp bitterness. Nice diacetyl profile for the style- low but present. Long oily mouthfeel and a fairly sharp, bitter aftertaste. Very nice. At first I thought this was terrible, but as it warms the beer really shines and I’m glad I spent some time with it.

Bottle from my Capitol City H-BURG hookup (thanks, Fat Eddie Rendell). Pours light copper with 1f ow head. Nose is malty, perfumy and fruity florals, hops, peppery, slight funk. Tastes malty, hoppy, with a sweetness akin to peach/pear wine, some florals, earthy notes, definite hopbacking, and a smooth finish. How a beer from central PA became a California Common is a mystery to me.

This beer had much more flavor and body than I was expecting. Very little head, and what did form dissipated quickly with no lacing. About the best way I can describe the mouthfeel is creamy (sorry I can’t be more poetic). I did pick up the stickiness that others have noted. The strong hop profile in the finish really makes this one stand out, and it was a pleasant surprise. A flavorful, quality beer perfect for a saturday spent outside in the yard. Gotta love the Scratch series.
