COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
From the twisted mind of Tröegs brewer Bruce Tanner comes Scratch #36, a white ale brewed with spices that we’ve dubbed Bruce Wit – since we’re a lot closer to Bruce than we are to Belgium. Scratch #36 has been a work in progress for Bruce. He used to brew this beer style at his old job and couldn’t wait to tackle it again. In addition to traditional ingredients like orange peel and coriander, Bruce has reached farther into the spice rack incorporating black pepper and star anise into the hopback to intensify the flavors.Pouring a cloudy straw color with a foamy white head, Scratch #36 delivers a bevy of citrus and spicy aroma notes with a hint of licorice from the star anise. . The spices are offset by a wheaty dough taste. Black pepper gives this wit a nice bite on the back end, while the Lachouffe yeast gives a cider twang to finish each sip.

Bottled. An unclear golden beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma has notes of coriander, yeast, fruit, and wheat. The flavor is sweet with notes of wheat, peaches, coriander, and spices, leading to a dry spicy finish. The body is light.

Served on-tap in the Troegs tasting room into a Dreamweaver goblet. A - Pours a cloudy straw yellow with a small white head that leaves little to no lacing down the glass. S - On par with most other wit’s I have had. The belgian yeast and wheat lend a biscuity aroma with hints of orange and lemon coming thru more and more as the beer warms. A slightly grassy aroma from the hops is very faint thanks to all the other more pungent aromas. T - Fairly chewy up front thanks to all that yeast and wheat. A little bite from the grassy hops helps balance this one a bit. The citrus flavors of orange and lemon carry over from the nose but they don’t seem to be as strong as I expected they would be. A fairly simple, yet slightly complex, wit beer. M - Light body and flavor with a strong wheat/yeast aftertaste. A tad bit watery with good carbonation. D - Awful late in the year for a wit isn’t it? Oh well. Not one of my favorite styles but still a very enjoyable beer. Another great addition to the scratch lineup.

On tap at the brewery this past weekend. Reviewed from notes. Pours a light lemon color with a good dose of haze. A small white head and not that much lacing. The nose is pretty light with some faint spice and orange peel. The taste is a little less mild with a bit of sweetness and wheat in addition to light orange. Good light and somewhat creamy feel with nice drinkability. While I like how the Scratch beers are normally a bit out there, this was nice and refreshing.
