Commercial Description:
Enjoy this as a token of our appreciation. With the demise of Tröegs Oatmeal Stout, this long-forgotten recipe serves as an inspiration and a heartfelt thanks to our faithful stout fans.

What’s special here? We start with a seductive malty sweetness, combine it with hints of chocolate and roasted flavors and round out the texture and taste with a healthy helping of oats. A three-hop blend brings perfect balance to the sweet malt adding a dry finish to this big beer.

12oz bottle from MrBendo. Aroma: Sweet roasted malt with notes of chocolate, caramel, grain, and raisins. Appearance: Dark, dark brown in color with no highlights. Light tan head was full and creamy with great retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Sweet roasted malt hits first with notes of chocolate and coffee. Raisins, smoke, caramel. Flavor peters out into the finish and leaves a weird ashy astringency. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Light alcohol warmth in back of mouth. Overall: This looked awesome, smelled good, but tasted....meh. Flavors don’t build and just end up falling flat.

Poured a deep brown color with a ruby tint and thin tan head. Chocolate nose hits first with some mild roasted malt underneath. Lighter notes of vanilla and sugar round it out. Some chalky notes in there. Chocolate and roasted malt. Nice sweetness with a touch of raisin. Medium bodied and creamy.

Bottle from Miver. Brownish black [mostly black] pour with a little head. The aroma has a syrupy, molasses note, some burnt coffee and coal and barbeque. Big, nice mouthfeel, a bit vegetal tasting, not nearly as sweet as the nose. Despite the thick mouthfeel this at times feels like it lacks body, as odd as that sounds. Some carbonic acid and milkiness is present, for sure. A decent IS.

This poured dark brown in color with a thin light brown head. The nose was powerful with scents of fig, plum, chocolate and crème. In the mouth it was full-bodied, sweet and concentrated without being heavy. The flavors followed the nose before finishing both bitter and creamy. This is an interesting combination of sweet and lush along with dark and bitter.

Bottle, thanks hopdog! Pours translucent very dark brown with ruby lights and a thick and lacy tan head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar and chocolate. Silky full body, chewy, with light carbonation. Sweet taste of chocolate coffee and caramel, but not a big taste, and then whamo...a big and bitter chocolate pine finish. Overall, not a bad beer, but a little ’soft in the middle.’ The finish is more of a wakeup call than something that goes with the flow.

Bottle.

Pours dark but not so very dark that one thinks Impy Stout based on the appearance. Tons of brown sugar and plum on the aroma. Lots of sweet molasses (not sticky) , again plums, hint of smoke, pie cherries, bits of chocolate. Perhaps not a fully fitting metaphor but this seems like a poor man’s Adam, less smoky, less leathery, but interesting and quite reasonably complex but more to the point, entirely enjoyable, not hot in the least. Nice!
