Tröegs and Fat Head’s Brewing Companies are hooking up for a collaboration brew on October 11th to give Fathead’s Brewer Matt Cole a chance to kick the tires and take our 25 barrel brewhouse for a spin around the block before decommissioning it and moving it to its new home in Cleveland, Ohio. Fatheads has made quite a name for themselves with their award-winning Headhunter IPA, so Matt asked if we could collaborate on a hoppy ale (no, it’s not Headhunter!) to christen his new brewhouse. Part of the Scratch Series, Fat Scratch Fever will debut in early November at the new Troegs Brewery in Hershey and at both Fatheads locations.

The beer poured decently with a nice golden straw color with a nice white head and good lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with a definite resin presence and subtle hints of floral smells on the back end. The beer tastes great as you get the definite piney hoppiness punching you in the mouth with a mild blend of floral and corn finishing you off. The mouthfeel is decent as tthe beer is well carbonated, medium bodied, and leaves you dry as a desert. Overall, another powerful IPA with great tastem but will easily burn you out.

growler, aka Fat Scratch fever... dark gold almost copper but clear, nice retentive head... wasn’t a big fan of this, too much yeast not much malt, off bitterness... average

Growler from troegs taproom. Very clean piney grapefruit with golden color and crisp white head - more sessionable than other troegs scratch ipas, but a bit thinner in flavor as a result. Not my fav scratch ipa, but very enjoyable nevertheless.

Draught at the brewery. Pours golden amber with a thick white head. Aromas are pine, some citrus, but also spicy. The taste is in your face spicy and resinous. Warmth from the ABV over 9. Body is thick and a bit sticky, leaves nice lacing on the glass. A solid IPA.

Served on-tap in the Troegs tasting room. A - Pours clear amber orange with a HUGE three finger tall white head leaving spotty webs of lacing down the glass. A very pretty beer to say the least. S - Smells of bready malt, tropical fruits, grassy hops, and damp earth. I thought this one was a little dull at the beginning but it really ramped up once it warmed up a bit. Not too bad. T - Starts off with some light grassy hop bitterness quickly giving way to a big dose of cereal grains, light tropical fruit, and some light spice. The finish is more chewy grains and light hop bitterness mixed with a light dryness, lingering on the pallet for a short period of time. With such a low ABV. this one is very easy to drink. M - Medium body and flavor with moderately high carbonation. Chewy, bitter, feel with some light dryness at the end of each sip. O - I enjoyed this one. It is very easy to drink and the flavors are all there. I didn’t get as much fruit / hops as others but there was still plenty there to enjoy. One of the better Scratch IPA’s for sure.

Clear amber, white cover. Aroma is crystal malt, fruity hops. Taste is the same, the crystal malt comes out too much for my liking, the hops are nice, but I much prefer the Head Hunter (hopefully this new brewhouse can produce more bottles for distribution).
