SCRATCH 59-2012 – MIGHTY MOOSE MILD
RELEASE DATE: 3/6/12
Scratch #59-2012 tackles a tiny beer in bold strokes. Designed by Jeff Musselman, “Mighty Moose Mild” draws inspiration from classic English ales and delivers a delicate session beer. With an earthy amber color, nutty spice notes from Fuggle hops and a damp forest floor yeast finish, Scratch #59 fills us with dreams of spending the day in a low-ceilinged pub throwing darts, eating fresh fish and chips and downing numerous pints. Scratch #59 measures in at 22 IBU’s and 4.7% ABV.
On tap only at the brewery. No bottles.

Draft at Craft. Pours dark brown with off-tan head. Nose is vienna malt, nuts, vinous fruit. Tastes earthy, with dusty yeast esters, a lot of nuts, and a fairly complex finish. This one was like a nut mild ale.

Disclaimer: had draught version after drinking most of two cask ales, and I prefer unfizzy beers! Dark copper color and somewhat fruity-hoppy aroma. Mega-fizzy palate to the point of nearly acidy. Dull kind of grainy taste that fades quick to somewhat bitter and sour, with a hint of canned goods. Too much fizz and lacking in taste.

Tap. Pours clear gold with thin, fizzy white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is corn, cereal and straw malt, floral hops, coriander, and light fruit. Flavor is malt dominate with faint supporting hops and fruit esters; dry finish. Light body, medium carbonation, and low warmth.

Draught pours murky brown with little head. Aromas of funk and roasts malt. Taste is delicate with some light malt and sOme mild funkiness. Body is light and very sessionable. Overall a great session brew that goes down smooth with plenty of flavor.

Served on-tap at the Brewery. A - Pours caramel amber brown with a dense two finger tall white head leaving thin streaks of lace down the glass. S - Smells of caramel sweetness and plenty of grain throughout. Some light citric hop bitterness comes through as it warms up. I was expecting a bit more hops to this one. T - Starts off with quite a bit of grain, not really chewy but it is noticeable, quickly giving way to a bit of toffee and caramel sweetness. As it warms, the fuggle hops come through a bit more but they never get to the level of being overpowering. Finish is a little sweet with some bitterness, not lingering for very long. M - Medium body with a light flavor and moderate carbonation. Fairly grainy throughout with a little hop bitterness at the end of each sip. O - All things considered this one was decent. The flavors were mild, just as they should be, and the low ABV makes it easy to drink. Not my favorite but still pretty good none the less.

Pours a rich dark reddish brown. Aroma of smoked malt with tones of fresh earth. Taste is malt forward with a dry smokey finish. Good session ale.
