COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between beer writer Jack Curtin and brewer Tim Mayhew, Scratch #66-2012 has been brewed specifically for Philly Beer Week. Like his snark-filled rants, Jack’s beer tastes veer toward the peppery, yeasty flavor that dominates this French-style lager. The high-temperature fermentation and the addition of Tellicherry Black Pepper combine to create a deceptively, crisp, clean flavor for a 6.8% ABV beer.

Tap at hop angel. Cloudy copper. Aroma of yeast is off putting. Spicy, pepper, yeast. Some metal. Not loving this.

Slightly hazy golden with a large white head. Aroma is corn, malt, light floral, toast. Medium, slightly frothy body. Flavor is toast, light corn, malt, lightly spicy. I couldn’t get into this one.

On tap, pours a somewhat clear, gold, thick head and decent lacing. Notes of corn lager, yeast, straw, wheat and other bland flavors. Some spices present as well. It was refreshing but that’s expected with lagers. Alright.

jsmerig (1198) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 13, 2012
Pours a clear vibrant yellow with a thick foamy head. Taste is smooth and refined. A touch of sweetness up front finishing with a subtle peppery spice in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Refined. Too bad it’s a one off.

Served on-tap at the brewery. A - Pours clear amber orange with a nice one and a half finger tall white head leaving spotty lace down parts of the glass. S - Smells of spicy belgian yeast, black pepper, dulled fruit and some sweet caramel malt. Kinda sweet smelling initially growing spicier as it sits in the glass. T - Starts off with a bit of sweetness from the caramel malt quickly giving way to hints of black pepper, dulled citric fruit and some spicy belgian yeast. Finish is a little chewy with some light spice, lingering on the palate long after consumption. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Plenty of peppery spice throughout. The feel is probably the best part about this one. O - My least favorite of the three PBW beers. Nothing overly bad about it, just not my style of beer. With so many good options on I doubt I would come back for another.
