Scratch #69 - More Helles, Less Bock is an easy-drinking lager that blurs the lines between Helles, Bock and Maibock styles. At 5.6% ABV, 21 IBU, and light straw color, Scratch #69 portrays itself as a Helles; but inside the glass lurks a more complex beer reminiscent of the Bock style. Aromatic toasted chestnuts and hints of honeysuckle flower present themselves before the first sip. After tasting More Helles, Less Bock you will immediately want more. The floor-malted barley gives an earthy flavor that pairs with the hints of bitterness from Tradition. The finish is sweet and malty, yet still refreshing; a light filtration adds bread notes at the end.

12 oz bottle, from brewery. Pours a clear dark gold body with a small frothy white head that faded to a thin film. The nose is slightly sweet malt with some bready and crackery notes. Some nice light flowery hop notes add a little bit of complexity. The flavor is pretty solid as well, on the lighter side as far as a Helles Bock goes in the malt department. It does make it a bit more drinkable and refreshing though. Nice slight honey sweetness throughout with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish. Light to medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice beer, especially for the heat of summer.

12 oz bottle from Capones. Poured a medium to thicker clear burnt orange body under an average sized fizzy white head. Aroma is sweet, lots of grape and raisin, along with along with dough and some flowers. Medium to fuller bodied with average to softer carbonation, a chewy syrupy body that finishes dry. Flavor isn’t as sweet as the aroma with notes of honey topped bread, nut shells, earth, grains, white grapes. Solid offering.

Bottle. Pours translucent deep golden with 1-finger white head. Nose is bready pale malt, hops citrus fruit, florals, honey. Tastes on the sweet side, with up front pale malt and honey, mid-palate hops, citrus, and florals, and a finishing heavy honey hit on the palate. The whole thing comes together beautifully.

Average, nothing special about this beer. Didn’t get any of the early flavor of hints of bitterness advertised. Tasted far better than a mass produced lager, but really just tasted like a lager by any other microbrewery.
