COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To compete with the more fashionable Bohemian pilsners of the day, the Export Lager style originated in Dortmund, Germany. Often referred to as “Dortmunder Lager,” the style gained popularity in the late 19th Century among German industrial laborers, making it a true working man’s beer. In keeping with the tradition, Scratch #81 harkens back to one of the first Tröegs beers ever produced - Bavarian Lager. This slightly dry, pale golden lager has subtle hop bitterness and a moderately low ABV, making it a perfect session beer… or for that matter, a suitable shift beer after a hard day’s work. Scratch #81 is available on draft only.

Served on-tap at the brewery.
A - Pours pale amber yellow with a nice one finger tall white head leaving light lace down most of the glass.
S - Smells of sweet pale malt, dry yeast and some faint hop bitterness. Not a lot going on in this one. Could use a bit more hop aroma but it is still decent for what it is.
T - Starts off with some malty sweetness quickly giving way to some light hop bitterness and some breadiness, combining with the residual sweetness to linger on the palate for quite awhile after the finish.
M - Light body with moderate carbonation. The lack of bold flavors, smooth feel and the low ABV make this one very easy to consume.
O - This is nothing earth shattering obviously but it is a very nice session lager. I would like a little more hop aroma/flavor from it but it is what it is. A nice scratch beer for people who do not like huge beers all the time.

On draft at the brewery. A hazy tannish amber with a small head. Aroma was woodsy and spicey. Tastes smooth and malty with a spicey and slightly bitter finish. It was really quite delicious. I would have been happy drinking quite a bit more than the half pint I ordered.

Wife got this at the Troegs Brewery so I snagged a few sips. Aroma is floral and sweet bready malt. Taste is light, some light spices and hops. Light body. Pretty good.
