4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting IV. Appearance is deep, brown with a crimson tint and huge brown head. Dark fruits, light cocoa, licorice, anise, and spice in the aroma. Taste is roasty, dark fruits, dark chocolate, anise, and light smoke but very smooth for 11%. Creamy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really well-crafted stout.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared by Chaney. Thanks Brandon!
The beer is opaque and completely black. A thick, dense beige head looms over the beer, plastering the sides of the snifter with foamy lacing.
The aroma brings heavy roast and oak, with hints of chocolate and coffee.
The flavor is almost entirely dominated by roast, with some coffee presence emerging in the finish. Oak and alcohol are there as well, but overshadowed by charred and/or roasted malt.
The beer is relatively full bodied, with plenty of carbonation. Alcohol presence is there, but not overpowering.
Overall, a bit out of balance, but still enjoyable. For a brewery only release and at $30 per bottle, I expect more.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasting at Papsø’s
Black color, with generous brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Good body strength, dark chocolate flavor, with some sweetness, roasted malts, too high carbonation; correct bitterness level; rather high alcohol feeling. Good but messy.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
75cl, no mention of ABV, new exclusive American brew Anno 2010, thx to Secret Santa!, complex sweet Stout, roasted/sweet and slightly woody/spicy, heavy, yet balanced, hazy, rocky head, very good brew, yet very expensive!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750mL bottle. Poured very deep brown with a quick-forming, long-lasting tan head.. thick lacing followed it down. The aroma picked up lots of mostly sweet vanilla and cocoa upfront, with molasses and a kiss of honey beneath.. warmed up the back of the nostrils.. oak really rounded it out and it smelled really smooth. The flavor found a blend of sweet cocoa, darker chocolates, and licorice at the core, with vanilla and tangy oak laced throughout.. loved the tangy oak and light peppery alcohol over vanilla and cocoa on the finish. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. smooth feel on the middle, but the carbonation got in the way at other times.. good roast to it, but it could’ve used a tad more.. overall a very good brew that I’d love to try again.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared by HopBear...thanks Barry! - Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is soured dark malt, milky with a chocolately note. A bit of heat, but not a ton. Taste is about the same, with a bit more milkiness showing through, with an odd cherry taste. The oak shows a bit, with some charred roastiness and coffee showing through. Vanilla. Nice thick body with a silkiness. This just didn’t work for me.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a black liquid with dense brown head. The nose is woody, roasted malts, light notes of booze, dry and ashy with some chocolate sprinkled in. The flavor has wood and booze up front, ashy malts, notes of cherries and a bit of sweet malt in the back. Medium body and assertive, balanced carbonation. Tastes almost slightly infected with an off cherry sweetness.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750ml bottle served in a tulip. Pour is onyx with 4 fingers of milkshake quality foam on top; the head left a beautiful show of lacing and lasted the duration of the whole 750ml! Nose is chocolate, vanilla, nugget, oak, figs, roasted malt, and a light undetermined spice. Taste is spot on, delivered in a smooth, decadent fashion, with the hops and roasted malt taking a bit of authority over the sweeter notes to balance to perfection. This is truly an amazing imperial stout, and I’ve enjoyed this more than any other offering I’ve encountered from Troegs. Pity this was a one shot deal!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
I have been waiting for this beer to come out for years. A 750ml bottle shared with friends, poured into a few taster glasses.
A - Pours jet black with a gigantic three finger dark brown head, dissipating down to thin film, leaving sticky sheets of lacing down the glass. Very active looking in the glass.
S - I seem to be picking up way more hops than most people. The spicy, earthy, hops really jumped out at me when we opened the first bottle. Plenty of oak mixes well with a bit of sweet vanilla, chocolate, and some licorice. Dark and earthy but still pretty well balanced. Pretty good.
T - Starts off with some earthy, spicy, hops warming your pallet for the rest of the flavors. They are quickly enveloped into the darker, heavier, heart of this beer. Where did all that 11% ABV go?!? Flavors are similar to the nose with the tons of oak with a bit of chocolate and vanilla sweetness sneaking in toward the end. Finish is not as I was expecting, with a light lingering roasted sweetness. A bit too much oak for my tastes. I wish more of the chocolate and vanilla came thru. Not the best I have ever had, but nowhere near the worst.
M - Heavy body and flavor with above average carbonation. Some of the bottles I have tried have been nice and creamy in the feel, others have been quite over carbonated and prickly on the pallet. It seems to be hit or miss.
O - Not too bad. I have had samples from four different bottles now and all have been decent but far from great. It is not overly sweet like some of the other BA stouts I have had recently but the large oak character is a bit overwhelming.
