(750ml bottle) very dark brown, lasting creamy tan head. Nose of rich fudge, bourbon, a bit ashy as well. Taste is ashy, bourbon, wood, fudge and decadent. Medium thick body, really excellent palate linger.

750 ml bottle via BA trade. Pours an opaque dark brown color with a huge, rocky, frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, booze, oak, cacao nibs, figs, and tannins. Flavor of oak, roasted malts, toasted brown sugar, booze, dark chocolate, dates, and figs. Medium-bodied, with a rich, roasty, boozy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Has some complexity but I was a little let down by this, as I had much higher hopes.

Dark rich pour with a medium head. Aroma has some roasted malts, some sweetness, a hint of cocoa and vanilla and wood, also some odd earthy aroma. Flavor is pretty light overall for a barrel aged, especially a Splinter. Some flavors of oak and roast with dark cocoa and nuts. Hint of bitterness and a hint of sourness, nothing tart just that slight wine note.

Best little trade from drowland. Dark pour with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, alcohol, and a little coffee. Taste is alcohol, lots of bitter chocolate, smoke, and roasted.

Tiny ass handbottle courtesy drowland. I split this with 3 people. Haha! Appearance: 2 1/2 inches tall. In a tiny vodka bottle. Smells through a small hole like dark malts and whisky. Flavor is straight from the bottle. Woody notes and dark malts. Slight smoke. I was gonna say kind of disappointing but instead I’ll say kind of drowland.

5/22/11. 750mL bottle courtesy dfclav. Opaque black pour with a nice big tan head that lasts. The aroma is huge oak with a touch of sour in there as well, on top of a bit of roast and chocolate. Sweet flavor of chocolate with a touch of vanilla, a ton of lingering roast, and a dash of sour. Pretty disappointing, as I was expecting a lot more vanilla and chocolate.

Opened this bottle at our post-Christmas tasting in Chicago. Served in my Cantillon tulip. I’ll say straight for the start--I was quite disappointed in this, especially after having read all the reviews and having really enjoyed all the other Splinter releases. Pours near black with a nice tan head and a bit of lacing as it goes down. The aroma is plenty roasty with some chocolate and vanilla. Quite a bit of roast. The taste follows along the same lines. I really got quite a bit of roasted malt and the oak, vanilla, and chocolate were sitting in the background. Mouthfeel is the same with plenty of roast and a bit of a dryness from the oak character. I really wasn’t a big fan of how much roasted malt was here, as it really took away from some of the better aspects of the beer. Hoping this gets better with time and I’ll find another bottle to try, but maybe it just wasn’t for me. Had a second bottle thanks to Pete and my initial thoughts are confirmed. Too roasty and not nearly as complex as I would hope. One dimensional. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-05-2011

Bottle: The aroma consists of roast, black licorice, coffee, and vanilla. It pours a dark bqith with some orange highlights when held to the light. It has a small beige ring around the edges of the glass for a head. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and fruit. There’s a good black licorice licorice backbone. The finish is roasted coffee, vanilla, and oak. Medium bodied with lively carbonation for an Imperial Stout...and even more so for a barrel aged one.
