NOTE: Splinter Brown is highly-carbonated – so high the pressure has pushed corks out of the bottling during the aging process. For safety reasons, this beer will only be served for on-premise consumption and all bottles must be opened by Troegs servers.

Splinter Brown’s roots extend to July 2010 with the brewing of Scratch #34, a Belgian-style Dubbel. Some of this wort made it into a “funk” tank to ferment with bacteria and a blend of ale, Brett and sherry yeasts, but a large quantity was bottled in one of the brewery’s earliest bottle-conditioning projects. When the bottles didn’t carbonate properly, a resourceful brewer blended nearly 100 cases of beer with the original “funk” tank beer and transferred it into oak barrels. Fast forward to 2013, and this beer has aged with a finely developed Brett character, but only minimal tartness. Splinter Brown’s third flavor profile was created by blending the barrel-aged beer with a fresh-brewed sour mash fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and aged for six months in French and Hungarian oak wine barrels. This unique merger of flavors has resulted in a wonderfully complex Sour Brown Ale that is truly a labor of love. Cheers!

Bottle at the source. Pour is dark hazed chestnut brown with a tight bubbly tan head. The nose has a lot of wood, some light vanilla notes, sour cherries and a hint of bandaid. Taste is fairly sour with high carbonation and a medium to light body. Taste has a fair bit wood and some vanilla undertones. Hints of brown malt meld with a strong balance of cherry, berry brett.

Hazy brown color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of wood, dark fruits, cocoa, nuts, and wild yeast. Taste of dark fruits, dark malts, wood, and a tart finish, with high carbonation.

hazy chestnut, murky with thin cream ring. Strong balsamic nose, high acidity cuts sweetness. Flemish dominates front, moderate acidity with good lactic and acetic combo, chestnut and cake malt support mid as co2 foams, drowning out acetic quality into the lime heavy end, softly sour with yogurt accents lasting. Very balanced, acetic kept low and still sparkling from co2 offset.

This one poured a dark red to brown with a beige head. Aroma was of overrioenned apples, brown sugar, light vinegar, toast, caramel, and mild funk. Flavor was tastey, toasted nutty cherries, followed by a lactic sourness, that’s not tongue voting at all and not too funky. Really nice stuff

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2015 Amber-brown body, medium sized off-white head and sparse lacing. Acetic with cherries, tannic red wine and leather. Medium bodied with lively carbonation, pleasant acidity and a clean finish. Definitely a beer that should be drank now.

Wonderful surprise at the tasting room. A: Nose is pungent with fruit that is perhaps past ripe - in a good way. A: Lovely deep reddish brown. Head falls quickly but the lacing never leaves. T: Sour cherries with some of the barrel oak. P: Started syrupy with a dry lingering finish.

Clear dark amber body, small fizzy off-white head. The nose is sweet and sour with lots of cherries. Nice light woodiness. The flavor is well balanced between the sour cherry notes, woodiness, and darker malts. Medium bodied, sweet up front, but drying out a bit on the finish. Some nice lingering tannic notes. Medium bodied with a slight clinginess and lively fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice stuff.

Poured from bottle at the brewery: Clear dark brown with a wonderfully fizzy head. A nice lacing remains. Aroma is more fruity than funky with a bit of wood. Flavor is clean yet complex with a bit of fruit and wood. Malty enough backbone with moderate tartness. The alcohol is well disguised. A nice drinking experience.
