The transformation of Scratch #3-2007 to Splinter Gold has been a slow rest in oak wine barrels dosed with brettanomyces. During a two-year aging period the horsy flavors of the brett combined with the Westmalle yeast used during primary fermentation to create a complex blend of flavors. Bone-dry and 12% abv, Splinter Gold is highly carbonated.

Splinter Red and Gold are both limited to 300 bottles and will only be available at the Tröegs Brewery Giftshop/Tasting Room.

2013 Splinter Gold originates from the Scratch #3 Triple recipe and is fully fermented with Westmalle yeast. The beer is then inoculated with two barrels of Splinter Gold (2010) infusing the beer with Brettanomyces for a secondary fermentation in oak wine barrels from Allegro Winery & Vineyards and virgin Pennsylvania oak barrels sourced from Keystone Cooperage. Three years in the making, Splinter Gold is a highly-carbonated, bone-dry wild ale boasting a rich Bret “funk” married with lush vanilla, toasted coconut, and oaky tannins.

This.onenpoured a semi hazy pinkish orange with a white head. Aroma was of.lots of oak, damp grass, lemons and cranberries. Flavor was woody, vanilla, fruity, lightly tart but nothing mouth puckering. Overall very nice.

Really interesting sour. The alochol is oddly non existent for such a big beer. Nice tartness and great oaky characteristics. Huge oak on the finish with some cherry, citrus, yogurt, and vinous notes.

xloved this, so much flavors, usually bourbon aged blond sours are overpowered but his one was balanced very nicely. Every sip just kept getting better, very impressive troegs!

Bottle @ The HUGE Tasting. The pour’s deep gold with a small head. Strong acetic funk. Loads of barrel, concentrated lemon. The taste is pretty hot. Some nail varnish. Syrupy vanilla pear. Bourbon notes. Woody hot finish. Full body, aggressive. Overall, fine.

Pretty sure this is from 2010, via in-person trade with orangesol IP Philly and brought to Sammy’s tasting. Cloudy copper with a creamy head. A great balance of light funk, horse blanket, mild chardonnay, oak, vanilla (but not too sweet), easy to drink with high carbonation, some aged blegian candied sugar and dry pleasant finish.

A very interesting beer. Spices, hops, tempered sourness, almonds, orange, some elements of lambic and of geuze. Soapy head. Smooth mouthfeel.Thanks Pushinkow for sharing.

Bottle shared at the Massive Friday Tasting, big thanks to our host with the most - Bruce, 03/01/14. Murky orange amber with a moderate light beige covering. Nose is musty, candle wax, light booze strains, dank wood, orange rind, light funk, tarte fruit skins. Taste comprises bitter orange, aged apple core, musty wood, sweet notes, toffee apple. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, light boozey knockings in the finale. Surprisingly easy drinking for 12% ABV! Decent enough, plenty going on, a little overly sweet for the style. Not top draw but decent enough work.

Mega Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to our graciois host for this. Pretty cloudy amber beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is soft and airy. The Worcester sauce sourness turns a little acidic but there is a nice balance of soft wood. Finishes soft.with a whisper of vanilla.

Bottle thanks to Bruce at the 2014 Mega Tasting. It pours hazy golden with a small beige head and a few floaters. The taste is wood, musty, barnyard, coconut, vanilla, manure, funk and spice. The taste is tart, bready, acidic, funk, musty/blue cheese, white grape skin, big alcohol kick, wood and vanilla with a dry, tart finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit hot and acidic for my liking. Would have probably have preferred this with a bit less alcohol. OK.
