COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before filtering the final batch of 2008 Mad Elf we racked some beer into bourbon barrels for six weeks of tender loving care. After bottling, we aged the beer for approximately eight months. This allows the tart cherries to push to the front. Subtle vanilla, bourbon, charred wood, coconut and toasted nut endnotes emanate from Splinter Red.

Splinter Red and Gold are both limited to 300 bottles and will only be available at the Tröegs Brewery Giftshop/Tasting Room.

2013-08-17. Hazy red brown body near headless. Aroma is sweet, lightly oxidized malt. Flavoured sweet, modest bourbon over sweet lightly oxidized malt core. Average bodied palate, modest carbonation. Okay, I think the base beer may be just bit too mild to support the bourbon, and it is showing its age a bit I think. Bottle, Campground Brewdown.

Bottle at CGBD. Pours amber with a thin beige head. Big bourbon barrel, sweet malts, fruity cherry-like notes, vanilla, and sweet malts. Good stuff.

Notes from an awesome Splinter Series tasting! Pours amber with a maroon hue and very small head. Aroma immediately reminds me of an aged Pannepot, Belgian yeast-like, and then as if they aged the Pannepot on sweet cherries and honey. The flavor showcases the bourbon for sure witha bit of heat there, but not overbearing. Much of the cherry flavor has faded, but it is still there working well with the bourbon notes bringing some barleywine characteristics, like sweet malts.

BBA Mad Elf. pretty boozy, apricot and cherries with a coconut finish. it’s decent but I’m not already a fan of mad elf so this one wasn’t a shiner for me. Still, fun to try.

Drought. I tasted this as ’Mad Elf’ and I am assuming that Ratebeer knows what is says by directing me to this beer. Rich yellow color, small foamy beige head, no specific aroma, sweetish hops taste, long finish.

Shared by yourefragile. Thanks Michael. Served side by side with 2008 Mad Elf, also thanks to Michael. The beer is a relatively hazy reddish amber hue with a small, fleeting head. The aroma offers candy, sugar, cherries, Belgian yeast, booze. Flavor continues this path with additional notes of vanilla. Pretty good. A bit sweet and still boozy. A bit of age seems to have served this well, though I never sampled this fresh. Light to medium feel. This is definitely best shared with a group, as more than a small serving would be overkill. perhaps a touch of cocunt in the finish with subtle, lingering oak. Not my favorite, but certainly a special treat.

750ml bottle. Cloudy amber color, small off-white head. Aroma was some malty notes, a touch of cherry, woody vanilla notes. Sweet, light cherries. Alcohol pretty well masked in this particular one. Not bad!

750mL thanks to yourefragile! Thank you! Pours flat, tea red. No head. Nose is caramel, thick Twizzlers, tomato, rum, sugar, candy basket. Taste is sugar, paper, some harsh butyric acid type laceration on the palate. Very harsh.

Bottle. Cloudy amber color, not enough head to mention, although I guess I did just mention it. Aroma of sweet caramel. Taste is similar.
