COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Bottle shared by ryandevilhorns at my beer tasting. Poured a brownish reddish pour with small head. This was somewhat sweet and had an interesting grainy taste. Before I knew what it was I would have never guessed barley wine.

The Flying Mouflan is a beast in a bottle! It has all of the delicate touches of a finely crafted beer, but the alcohol content of a wine. The brothers worked well to make a beer that hides the hardness of the high alcohol content and leaves you only with a slight warmth to the product. As one would expect, this is not a highly carbonated beverage. The color is light and cheery, but it looks and feels like a barley wine through-and-through. There is an underlying sweetness that helps the brew go down. Beyond the warmth on your tongue, you’d never know this was more than a 4% beer.

Pours a brilliant orange brown hue with a one inch head. Aromas of caramel and fruity hops. Tastes very rich with caramel, fruit, citrus, and chocolate. A really interesting dessert beer.

22oz bottle, bought straight from the brewery. Poured a slightly dark reddish color with a off-white head. Aroma was toffee, caramel, more hopped than expected. Flavor was caramel, toffee, slightly earthy hops, with a notable amount of mild citrus. Enjoyed.

Very good beer. Tastes of coffee and vanilla, with a strongly alcoholic whiskey type taste.

pours clear, dark reddish brown. dense, off white ring of head that persists. Resin, pine, grapefruit, toffee and figs on a bold nose. thick, viscous mouthfeel. honey, caramel malts, resin, hints of dark fruits. little bit of heat on long finish. lay this puppy down for awhile if you can wait.

Pours a hazy brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma of rich syrupy malt and fresh hops. Taste is sweet and smooth with a good bitter offset which seems like black cherries. The strength of this one is masked well.
