thill25 (216), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 4, 2009 12 oz bottle...Pours crimson tinted amber w/ a slight off white head with no retention. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, bread, slight alcohol...very hearty malt character. The flavor was molasses sweet, with a little spice kick from the hops. Delightfully drinkable palate, medium bodied, with a lasting sweet finish. Great beer...wish I had another one! demdeac40 (238), Etowah, North Carolina, USA Feb 4, 2009 Pours a dark amber with a small head and good carbonation. Aroma is yeasty, dark dried fruits (raisins, prunes) and a nice toasty, roasty background. Flavor is licorice and malty sweetness. The 8.2% is nicely hidden. This could sneak up on you. BenDover (125), Texas, USA Jan 26, 2009 Pours a dark red, not much foam. Nice aroma of malts, yeasty and bready, very pleasant. Tastes a bit lighter than I expected, could be bolder. Good stuff, though. ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jan 23, 2009 Pours lighter than most doppelbocks, but it is very pretty. Very familair smell of toasted malts. The caramel covers up the 8.2% and makes this delicious. Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Jan 16, 2009 Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Aroma is of caramel hops, very slight toasted malts, and a little alcohol. Beginning flavors are pretty good with the malt character coming out pretty strongly. Sweet mid flavor that gives way to very little alcohol on the finish. Decent but not great. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 12, 2009 bottle at maproom. pours deep plum red held against the light, which super dirty dark brown head. very pretty beer. smells like hard candy. subtly so, not in the fucking godawful way that those konnig beers did. taste is balanced and controlled. getting some metal in the nose now, but the nutty and muted malts work easily. very drinkable, perhaps almost watery. definitely no alcohol. slimweebs (139), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 11, 2009 Updated: Feb 20, 2009Smells like alcohol and malt. Tastes very malty, just enough hops for a nice finish. Above average for a doublebock. For the price (8 bucks for a sixer), it is a great deal. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jan 10, 2009 22oz bottle poured into my Troegenator dimple glass (sweet and bigger thanks) produced a good finger worth of creamy tan head that trailed off to a thick lace. The body of the brew was clear brown with burgandy highlights really nice color on this doppelbock.
Aromas’ of caramel malts and some nuttiness, this brew is very sweet in the nose. A little disappointed I didn’t get any bready yeast from it
I think the flavors are good, but a tad on the sweet syrupy side for me. It needed a little more balance from the roasted malts to even out the malt sweetness. The body of the brew was spot on medium to thick in the mouth with enough carbonation to keep it from feeling like syrup
Even with some flaws in my book, this is still one of the best American doppelbock I have tried. Very drinkable, I finished the bomber with no problems at all and was left wanting for more. Good job Tröegs, you haven’t disappointed me yet. my score’s maybe low in a couple areas but I am comparing it to Imports of this style
