Commercial Description:
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Bottle. Clear brown pour, small off-white head. Sweet malt, caramel, dark fruit, sugar, and warming alcohol. Not a big fan of this at the moment, but it is well made.

courtesy of fiulijn - clear brown colour with a modest head retention; aroma of malt and nut with a hint of solvant, some caramel too; sweet and slightly sticky; some late bitterness, heavy caramel and sweet malts in the finish

Bottled, thanks Timo A! Dark reddish amber color. Sweet, malty and caramelly flavor with some fruitiness and vanilla. Thick sweet malty and caramelly flavor with raisins and plum. Some warming alcohol. Good maltiness but too sweet for me. Has some barley wine feel to it.

Label on bottle is different than the label shown on RateBeer, pours a clear bright deep red with hints of bronze, there were a few off-white bubbles after the pour to make a thin a cover, some effervescence, this beer gave no lacing on the glass, big malt sweetness and malt bread aromas with light caramel, sugary sweetness and faint toasted malt, flavors of sweet malt, bread and caramel, has a some bitterness at the finish, bitterness does help to balance the sweetness, this drink starts sweet but ends pretty balanced, not overly sweet like a lot of Dopplebocks, some alcohol warmth on the palate but that is it, alcohol is not intrusive in any way, mouth feel is thick, almost syrupy, well, this beer smells sweeter than it tastes, I am glad the sweetness was balanced with some bitterness, this is a sweet beer but not so sweet that it teeters on the throwing up side of sweet (too much sweet for me), alcohol is hidden well on the nose and palate, so, this is a sleeper in my book, I like the Dopplebocks that are darker and have the darker aromas and flavors, not bad but not my preference.

This was a very enjoyable finish to a long day. Sweet rich and satisfying. I am definitely going back to the store for more from the troegs brewery.

12 oz bottle. Deep clear brown with a thick tan head that leaves some sticky lacing. Sweet caramel, raisin, plum aroma with some bread and very light spicy hints. Flavor is sweet bread with a bit of sourness and bitterness. Thick body with mild carbonation and a soft smooth mouth feel. Great doppelbock, wish this was available locally.

A crisp, clean dark brown with a small head. Nose is mostly toasted caramel malt with hints of piney hops. Palate is lively carbonation that’s a bit slick. Quite the bitter finish after a rather sweet start. I have never had a bad beer from Troegs, and this one honors their reputation!

22oz bottle courtesy of beerbill poured into a tulip. Pours a deep, clear reddish amber with a small creamy off-white head that sticks to the glass on the way down to a heavy collar. The aroma is very sweet with tons of caramel malts and toasted bread. There are some dark sweet fruits as well. The taste keeps up the sweetness with caramel dominating up front with some slightly syrupy molasses. The toasted malts form a solid backbone but the sweetness is the main player in this beer. The mouthfeel is fairly full bodied and close to syrupy. This is a solid beer but it starts to get a little sweet and syrupy for my liking after a while. Not in the top class of doppelbocks, but pretty good.
