Moshe (8), Rhode Island, USA does not count Oct 24, 2009 This was a very enjoyable finish to a long day. Sweet rich and satisfying. I am definitely going back to the store for more from the troegs brewery. savnac (394), Palmer, Alaska, USA Oct 15, 2009 12 oz bottle. Deep clear brown with a thick tan head that leaves some sticky lacing. Sweet caramel, raisin, plum aroma with some bread and very light spicy hints. Flavor is sweet bread with a bit of sourness and bitterness. Thick body with mild carbonation and a soft smooth mouth feel. Great doppelbock, wish this was available locally. thebusstop (11), New York, USA Oct 13, 2009 A crisp, clean dark brown with a small head. Nose is mostly toasted caramel malt with hints of piney hops. Palate is lively carbonation that’s a bit slick. Quite the bitter finish after a rather sweet start. I have never had a bad beer from Troegs, and this one honors their reputation! GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 30, 2009 22oz bottle courtesy of beerbill poured into a tulip.
Pours a deep, clear reddish amber with a small creamy off-white head that sticks to the glass on the way down to a heavy collar.
The aroma is very sweet with tons of caramel malts and toasted bread. There are some dark sweet fruits as well.
The taste keeps up the sweetness with caramel dominating up front with some slightly syrupy molasses. The toasted malts form a solid backbone but the sweetness is the main player in this beer.
The mouthfeel is fairly full bodied and close to syrupy.
This is a solid beer but it starts to get a little sweet and syrupy for my liking after a while. Not in the top class of doppelbocks, but pretty good. nittanytide (33), Pennsylvania, USA Sep 29, 2009 Poured a deep brown with small head. Inviting, bready aroma. Slightly syrupy taste, which I disliked. Otherwise, decent. Love the ABV. Still, I expected more depth out of this one, or at least a drier finish. kwerikson (64), burlington, New Jersey, USA Sep 29, 2009 pours out ruby clear oarnge with an offwhite head that was about a finger thick and thin that was partially bubly and started to fall son after pouring. very, very slight lacing and there is a strong aroma of alcohol and wine grapes. the mouthfeel is light and lightly carbonated across the palate. kind of has a bitter sweet oniony flavour with a aftertatse of alcohol and sweet malts. very warm feeling as it goes down, perfect winter beer to keep you warm on a cold winter day. sirpsycho (342), Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 29, 2009 Draft at Table 22 (Murrysville) Pours a clear, darkish amber, small beige head. Malt and caramel pop out for the aroma. Flavor hit both the malt and caramel, but also had a really nice touch of sweet bubblegum notes in the background with just a vague hint of hops there also. Finish is creamy and nice. jrhammonds (28), Lincoln, Nebraska, USA Sep 29, 2009 Pours a ruddy brown. Strong plum, dark fruit aroma with matching flavor. Touch of munich malt in the background, but subsumed by strong dark caramel malts (120/special B). Would liked to have tasted more bready malt, less caramel--a bit cloying for a dopplebock.
