Commercial Description:
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Pours dark red-brown with moderate near-white head. Bread and caramel dominate the nose, which also has slight fruit/acidic notes. Flavor is malt driven with caramel and lots of sugar. A carbonated, medium body that’s slightly sticky. Too sweet for me, but still pleasant.

12 oz. bottle. Pours sparkling clear copper color with a good but short lasting white head. Aroma is malty, with plums, molasses and some cola notes. Full flavored with similar characteristics, but a bitter bite toward the finish. Nicely balanced. Medium bodied and relatively smooth, but a bit prickly with moderately high carbonation. Solid beer and a strong effort at a doppelbock.

On tap at the Mad Mex in West Philly. Clear rusty brown with a slim beige head. Nose is mild coffee and molasses. Medium light with a buzz. Taste is caramel, dates, mocha and smoky raisin. Finishes with dry walnuts, slightly bitter, some ash. At 8.2% might be worth cellaring a few.

Bottle (12oz). Shared by blankboy with garthicus. Clear ruby pour, smallish frothy off-white head. nice sweet roast malt aroma, fruit and light floral bitterness - simple but well balanced and appealing. Taste - like a scotch ale, somewhat boozy, vanilla and sweet caramel malt, slight marigold. Sticky, medium body, lightly astringent, sweet malty finish. I quite liked it.

Pours red brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is caramel, bread, and a hint of spice. Strong malt flavor, with a bit of spice and fruit in there. Flavor is growing on me as I drink it.

Reddish brown in the glass with a substantial, off brown head. Caramel, chocolate oatmeal cookie, and some faint hop backing. Flavors are pretty consistent with the aroma of the brew. Heavy, but well-carbonated.
