Commercial Description:
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

At first I thought I detected staleness but it was more the bittersweet mollasse-like flavor which smacks me of raisons, caramel malts and dates in a somewhat medium texture. The alcohol isn’t well hidden and it seems to float like a liquer in this meld of flavors.

Lousy label, glowing ruby orange beer, big head. Tart, boozy raisiny aroma. Sweet, woody, medium raisin fruitiness, immediately identifiable as a bock. Slightly metallic, finishes off with a bitter, dark dried fruitiness reminiscent of dates, prunes, etc. This is becoming one of my least favorite styles, as I age, but this is a decent example. Thanks to PorterPounder for the trade.

Bottle. Pours vibrant brownish red with quickly dissipating off-white head. Sweet, malty aroma of gingerbread cookies, fruity chocolate, and berries (or sangria, with a note of alcohol). Flavor like fruitcake or rum cake: somewhat fruity but mostly basic sugars, malts and alcohol. In both nose and flavors, alcohol overpowers and masks too much. Good and pretty complex, but I’m ruined by Ayinger Celebrator - a fruity doppelbock seems strange to me.

Dark brown in color, thick head that goes away quick. Taste is sweet and bitter with alcohol at first. That subsides and leaves way with a nice rich dopple bock. Slightly under rated in my opinion. Easy drinking and refreshing, but its no aventinus. Nice one though!

Bottle. At the Thunderbird Cafe in Lawrenceville, PGH. Pours dark amber with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is raisins, caramel, molasses, and a hint of lemon. Tastes of malt, caramel, and sour dough. Not bad, but I’d prefer a bigger body and a little bit of bitterness.

12-oz. bottle from artusory. Pours deep mahagony with a small light tan frothy head that mostly dissipates. Aroma is nutty and medium roasted caramel malts (meal, cereal) with hay and straw notes. Mild bitterness and acidity, medium sweet caramel malt, finish is dry and spicy, faint alcohol notes. Medium bodied and creamy palate that ends dry and spicy.

Sampled at Mondial 2006. Teh body was a dark copper with a medium yellowish colored head. The sweet aroma had honey and some old leather tofee. The taste is solid with toffee and caramel. There was also iced tea and apple core. The body was light with low carbonation

Pours a bright amber with a decent off white head that rings the glass. Aroma is wet bread and yeast with sweet malt. Flavor is buttery sweet roasted malt, maple syrup and caramel along with a flowery hoppiness. Very tasty; 8.2% ABV nearly goes unnoticed. Good stuff!
