CJfromPhilly (82), Aston, Pennsylvania, USA May 6, 2005 Pours a clear reddish brown/rusty color with an off white head that settles down into a minimal covering. Fairly active carbination. Aroma is of carmel & a little vanilla. Flavor is a bready maltiness, with more hints of caramel and vanilla. Little to no hops present in the flavor, this is NOT a brew for you hopheads out there. Sweetness is cut by a hint of alcohol, but it’s well hidden for a beer listed at 8.2% abv. Medium body & texture. Has a fairly clean, slightly bitter finish. Overall, one of my favorite beers, it turned me into a Doppel lover!!
lamas (709), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA May 4, 2005 Bottle. Bottled on: 08/19/04. Bright amber pour with smallish sandy head that leaves some lacing. Very fizzy. Chocolate, caramel and malts present in the nose along with some bananas and berries. Plenty of sweet malts and fruity flavors including banana. Some caramel present too. Pretty smooth going down. Only a slight presence of warming alcohol. WBC (8), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA does not count Apr 28, 2005 A little bit more smokey than I prefer my doppelbock. This beer provides an adequate abv% with a good punch to warm the palate as well as the soul on those long & cold winter evenings, however it could have been a little more balanced. The complex nose of this beer reveals a little charred walnut, smoked meat & subtle vanilla. I just wish it would have delivered on the palate a little better. Even though I expected more form this beer, I understand why those of the cloth chose to create and consume these types of beers to help them through those tumultuous 40 days. Cheers to troegs brewery for paying tribute to those wise monks before them. Jonathan3584 (323), Washington, Washington DC, USA Apr 22, 2005 Sweet and fairly complex. Not as solid as Victory’s St. Victorious. Good caramel color. Alcohol isn’t notable. Wiseblood (658), Clarksville, Tennessee, USA Apr 14, 2005 Deep ruby with a small white head. Sweet malt aromas of apples and yeast. Both strong and subtle overall, with fruity caramel notes that hide the tangible alcohol content. Slightly sweet smooth floral finish. Rballs01 (264), Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, USA Apr 4, 2005 Pours a nice amber-red. Smells of sweet malts, honey, raisin. Tastes of alcohol, molasses, little hop. Definitly a warming beer thats good for any occasion. Sirjohn03 (39), New Jersey, USA Apr 1, 2005 amber in color, very little white head. The sweet flavor masks the alcohol. and has a very smooth finish. Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 1, 2005 Minimal head, which disappears quickly. Cider smell, and nice candyapple brown color. Taste is malty / bready. ($2/12oz)
