COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Appearance is clear chestnut with almost no head or lacing. Smell is sweet caramel and chocolate, with hints of vanilla. Taste is exactly like the German chocolate cake that my grandmother used to make, it’s un-canny. Sweet caramel and chocolate throughout. Mouthfeel is slightly thin for its strength. Sweeter than your average doublebock, but nice if you like the style.

12 oz bottle-pours a creamy tan/light brown head. Hazy deep orange/amber color. Aroma-puts off a lot of aroma. Sweet, sharp___(fruity syrup smell) possibly from plums or apricots, malty. Taste follows the aroma with the malt becoming a nutty malt. Seems like oak barreled. OK carbonation. Occasional, not to my taste but, nicely done. Date stamp on bottle was partially legible, approx 10/04. Other 6 packs in this store went back to ’03.

Bottle from Captain Cougar. Thanks Tom! Pours a beautiful garnet with a temporary light tan head. The aroma is simply caramel. Rather full bodied with mild carbonation. Flavor is caramel with a light touch of hop, maybe. Finishes bready caramel. It’s not dry but it’s not sticky sweet either. A pretty good beer.

Had the Troegenator tonight on draft at Shorty’s in NYC. In a word: delicious. This potent beer is tasty. Pours a light gold with a medium head. Nose of toasted caramel malts. The flavor is rich, mild fruity notes with strong hop character and a bit of breadiness. Finishes nicely, with that lip-smacking quality that strong beers possess. You musn’t chug this guy. Enjoy it, which isn’t hard.

A: This pours a dark caramel color with lots of hints of brown and some red. A nice fluffy white head sits on top. S: A lot of sweet smells coming from this beer. I picked up a bunch of sugar and malty sweetness. Perhaps some dark fruit aromas. Not really much contrast here. T: The taste is a bit more impressive than the nose. A big punch of caramel, accompanied by brown sugar and dark fruits. A bit of breadiness helps to even out the sweetness. M: A low carbonation gives a smooth, slick mouthfeel. D: I’m not the biggest fan of bocks, but this one was fairly good. I had no problem taking this one down, so I’d have to say it has high drinkability.
