Commercial Description:
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Bottle at Firewaters in Atlantic City. This brew pours a dark brownish-amber color with a thin off-white head that dissipates fairly fast. Spotty lacing throughout. Roasted malt aroma with hints of alcohol and raisins. Medium, smooth body with sweet malt and caramel flavors, accompanied by notes of hops here and there. The finish is on the sweet side with caramel and malt, followed by touches of hops and a bit of burning alcohol. Above average Doppelbock for my money.

In short: A Doppelbock on the fruity side of things. Good but nothing special.
How: Bottle 12oz, consumed fresh a few days after purchase
The look: Cloudy redish-brown body topped by a small off-white head
In long: This is a very fruity Doppelbock. Lots of dark fruits, red fruits, any color fruits. Round and smooth body. Some barley candies and molasses. Light earthy/peat notes. Actually the whole thing ends up feeling like fruit concentrate and watery molasses. Finish brings some hops with a tobacco-like flavour, more of this would have been great. Even if very juicy the beer is actually quite heavy. No alcohol presence at all. So I see here they call this the “liquid bread”, yep, topped that with some Rogue Hazelnut and a little NG Raspberry Tart and I’ve got myself the ultimate breakfast.

12-oz. Thanks, FrnaksnBeans! Pours a crystal clear dark brown with no head or lace to speak of after a minute or two. Sweaty, footy nose. Bits of nitrogen and cola nut there too. Medium, slightly oily body, fairly still. That combo of sweat, foot, nitro, and cola comes back around for the mid-palate. Not bad, not great. Still, I’ve been curious about this beer for ages, so it’s very cool that Jacob read my mind and bonused this to me. Sweet!

Bottle from a forgotten source. Pours a dark auburn color with a thin non lasting head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, toffee, and ripe/over ripe dark fruits. Flavors are very similar. More chocolate an dark fruits dominate. Sweetness is medium to strong, yet it is never cloying or overpowering. Clean finish for how much is going on. A good beer in a style that is not my favorite.

Verre de dégustation (provenant d’une bouteille de 12 oz) au Mondial de la Bière 2005 (Montréal, QC). Arôme: Odeur de fruits foncés, d’alcool et d’épices. Apparence: Couleur ambrée foncée. Aucun col. Aucune bulle. Aucune dentelle. Saveur: Goût de caramel et d’alcool. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Corps plein avec une texture huileuse. Faible effervescence en bouche. (Rating #169)

GABF 2008. Amber bronze, foamy off-white head. Huge maltiness in the aroma and palate: bread crusts, butterscotch, brown sugar. Really terrific!

Bottle during a BJCP training session. Clear reddish brown body with a medium creamy tan head. Sweet sugary aroma with some toastiness and light smoke. Dark malty flavor with some toastiness and almost burnt malt. Creamy mouthfeel.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of black cherry, brown sugar, wheat bread, and caramel malts. Poured dark amber/copper in color with a big, creamy khaki-orange head that lasted. Clear. Very good lacing. Flavor is very sweet and malty with a slightly spicy twinge. Also tastes of alcohol and burbon. Heavily sweet. Not bitter at all. Full body. Average carbonation. A little thick. Long, alcohol flavored finished.
