3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Poured a warm amber-brown color with minimal head. Great sweet aroma that follows through in the taste. Malt flavor really comes through for bit of extra sweetness up front and then a nice, warm finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
355ml bottle. Raisin brown colour, hazy, moderate off white head. Aroma is powerfully figgy. Raisins, prunes, figs, lots of dried fruit and sweetness. Kind of like a fruit cake, but good. Clean finish. Smooth for the strength. Overall, surprisingly drinkable.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a ridiculously good looking crimson-garnet with a khaki-toffee head that settles to a ring leaving little bits of lace here and there. Complex nose involves molasses, toast, spicy hops, a savory worcestershire/brown mustard note, grapes and prunes, a touch of smoke, and some alcohol vapors. Taste is quite sweet but fairly well balanced with bitterness, maybe even a dash tart. Fuller bodied, syrupy, sticky, fairly actively carbed, with a warm, toasty bitter finish. A deep and rewarding brew with plenty of good stuff going on.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Drank from the bottle as my weather-watchin’ beer this evening, and damn was this creamy! I’ve been sitting on it for a while, probably an ’09 or ’10 vintage, and never bothered to get into the six pack until now for some strange reason. Malty forward sweetness with some hints of dark fruit and molasses, very creamy... like the mouthfeel stands out more than anything else. Very tame with just a minor alcohol booziness on the back end, but unfortunately a bit past it’s prime. A bit of the... what is that... cardboard through the middle from over-aging. Aha! Found the bottle date: 09/23/10. Happy to have and drink, will definitely have to pick up a fresh batch to compare down the road.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep red pour. No head but looks to have some lively carbonation. Huge malt aroma. Big full mouth. Taste is full of sugar, yeast and bread. A big loaf of sourdough comes to mind for some reason. There is a citrusy brightness to the finish. Super smooth for 8.2%. Pretty tasty for the style.

I really dig this beer. It’s rich and sweet without being cloying or overly heavy. The alcohol is present just enough to compliment the malt. Very happy with this one

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
The beer is dark plum to amber in color with an inch of beige head. Audible fizzing. The aroma brings lager yeast, dark fruit, plums, toffee, caramels. Sweetness that was present in the aroma carries into the flavor. Lingering sweet toffee chews, candy. Hints of brown bread. Malty throughout. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. With Ayinger Celebrator sitting around on shelves at most decent beer stores, it's hard to choose another doppelbock. Still, this is worth a visit.
