COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

The beer is dark plum to amber in color with an inch of beige head. Audible fizzing. The aroma brings lager yeast, dark fruit, plums, toffee, caramels. Sweetness that was present in the aroma carries into the flavor. Lingering sweet toffee chews, candy. Hints of brown bread. Malty throughout. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. With Ayinger Celebrator sitting around on shelves at most decent beer stores, it's hard to choose another doppelbock. Still, this is worth a visit. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Alextricity (509) - Michigan, USA - APR 17, 2014
Appearance: A pretty clearly, a bit dark amber color. Nice head that goes away pretty fast and leaves no lacing behind. Smell: Sweet. Reddy. Malty. Nothing unexpected. There’s also maybe a slight spicy hop character to it, but it’s certainly a malty, sweet beer just from the aroma alone. Taste/feel: Tasting a lot like the smell. Solid, but not with a lot of depth, or blowing me away. 8%? Who would ever guess that? There’s no booze in the taste, and there’s no warmth at all. The feel is very nice on this -- a great nearly full-bodied mouthfeel and medium-ish carbonation. Again, just a lot of sweet malty "red" flavors in this beer. This is an ignorant-as-all-hell review because I’m not sure I’ve had a Doppelbock before. From what I know about them, this is what I’d expected. I didn’t think I’d love them, and I don’t love this beer. However, the feel on this beer is great, and it’s very drinkable at 8%. I’m just not high on the style, simply because I find it -- or at least this beer -- relatively interesting. I reiterate AGAIN, it’s still enjoyable, and very well crafted, without a doubt. A great choice for people who love sweet, malty brews.

Pint can shared by Nicola. Pours a beautiful garnet/tawny color, almost no head. Aroma is grain, banana, clove, sour cherry, plums. Taste is sweet caramel, rye bread, prunes, cinnamon, alcohol heat. Solid but not outstanding.

Bottle in Northfield, Ma. Dark brown body with medium, toasty head. Nose is caramel, malts, brown sugar, spices. Taste is malty, toasty, roasty with strains of sweet and lactose notes. Peppery, enjoyable and creamy texture. Good one.

Tap, dark copper color with a tan head. Can definitely small the malt and has a sweet, malty toffee taste. Very good beer.

Draft. Dark amber color with a weak tan head. Big malt aromas. Sweet, sticky mouth feel and flavor. Loads of malt, burnt sugar and grain.

Wow! An in-your-face tsunami of flavor. Rich malts balanced with hops and mild sweetness. A mighty style that has too much alcohol and sweetness for me, but a quality beer nonetheless.

From a tallboy(bonus points) into an imperial pint. Pours a dark brown but slightly translucent. Mild sweet honey and agave aroma. Mouthfeel is very medium. I expected it to be heavier but it was still very lager-like. Taske was sweet smoky water minerals birch beer and Peat. Ok but I was expecting more. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
