For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

22oz bomber from the Liquor Shop in Tyngsborro, Mass. Pours a brilliant translucent red-brown with a half inch of light tan head. Caramel, nut, toffee, and a slight background of herbal hops characterize the aroma. Caramel and toffee hit first in the flavor, plenty of nut, slightly herbal hops in the background, and just a hint of alcohol warmth, though it does not taste like an 8.2% beer. Toward the fuller side of body with moderate carbonation. Not viscous like some dopplebocks, makes this one more refreshing and drinkable than expected. All around, one of the best dopplebocks I have ever had. Well-balanced, drinkable, pretty. No complaints here. Glad I can get this in Tyngsborro!

A dark copper with ruby edges flows out of the bottled adorned with an interesting looking character set off with bushy white hair and a nasty set of horns. I assume he is The Troegenator. Smells like bread and spice. Not a lot of hops here, but I do get some sweet, toasty bread, some spice in the finish with a bit of chocolate in the aftertaste. Not really bitter, and the 8.2% ABV is sneaky.

One of my favorite beers. This is not your typical dopplebock, its taste goes well beyond that. When people are starting to cross over from macro-brews I recommend this because if they don’t like this, they probably won’t care for much in the way of microbrews.

Pours rich mahogany with a small tan head. Smells bready, caramel, and hints of earthy hops. Taste is sweet, caramel, hints of spice, bread. Full-bodied with a slick texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Tröegs Troegenator Doublebock finishes with a lingering sweetness.

A fantastic doublebock, my favorite offering from Troegs. Beautiful reddish brown - call it mahogany, dark amber, whatever, it’s pretty. Light tan or beige head, creamy and medium-bodied. Packs a nice ABV punch. Mildly sweet with molasses and caramel overtones. Pleasant long finish.

Pours a nice Carmel brown with low carbonation. Head settles quickly to a ring. Bready malts and finishes with a little cherry? Nice body. Bought it because I heard it won a medal at GABF. Way to go fellow Pennsylvanian.

Great Double Bock! I personally appreciated the strong body accompanied by great flavors. Like the monastic brewers, I believe I could use this beer to fulfill my nutritional needs.

12 ox bottle from Baruni’s in Baden, PA. Lots of goodness here, especially from the heavy malt and general chewiness. If you like your brew on the sweeter end you’ll appreciate this one.

Troegenator has a thick, beige head, a hazy, caramel color, bubbles, and heavy lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of strong, slightly fruity, brown bread malts, and the taste is of intense, strong bread crust, heavy malt flavor, some syrup, plum, figs, and dates. Fairly strong hop bitterness shows up, too. Mouthfeel is syrupy and rather heavy, and Troegenator falls between wet and dry. RJT
