For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Pours a cloudy copper. The aroma is an earthy malt. There’s little to none of the pruniness of some doppels. I tasted this one with the Full Sail Mercator and it wasn’t the beer Mercator was.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2010 Pours dark amber with a short lasting white head. Aroma is sweet, cookie dough, bready. Flavor is cookie dough, caramel, honey, raisons and plums. Texture is thick and chewy. Does a good job of hiding the 8.2% alcohol.

From Bottle

Poured dark, small white head. Aroma malty. Flavor of nuts, malts, caramel and bread. This is my first doppelback, so I was surprised. Medium body, easy to drink, a little bitter as it warmed.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2006 Yes, it really is as red as it is in the pic. Smells of a fruity bread aroma. Very interesting there. A rich malty taste with a bit of a bitter finish. RE-rate, reminds me more of an english pale than a doppelbock.

PorterPounder (7417) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - APR 18, 2006
Cork & Bottle Liquors, Baton Rouge, La. - 12 oz bottle. Light copper appearance, little to no head. Thin for a doppelbock. Sweet, molasses like aroma, some brown sugar and a trace of alcohol in the nose as well. Flavor is sweet, some cherries, some cotton candy. Turns slightly cloying as it warms though. Decently thick mouthfeel. Holds the 8.5% ABV well.
