For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as "liquid bread", a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix "ator," we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

Bottle dated 09.09.09. From my trade with MrBunn. I’ve decided that despite their high abv, doppelbocks probably should be laid to age too long. This one was fine, but some yeast has settled out and autolyzed, I think. Still, a big malty nose starts under the cap and doesn’t let up. Deep brown color. Taste is full of malts. As I suggested, this may have some dead yeast, which you can make work with you on a beer like this. Notes of clove too. Overall, a pleasant experience to drink. Hmm, no sediment on the bottom, so part of my opinion goes out the window. This wouldn’t stop me from ever having one again.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle bottled on 09/09/14. Mahogany brown and reddish pour with tan head that eventually fades. Sweet and malt forward aroma with a hint of booze. Medium to full body. Sweet malty taste that only has a mild bitter finish. A great rendition of the style.

Pours from the bottle with a clear rosy amber. Great round sweet malty palate. Nice sweet middle. Maybe a little berry hidden in there. Great slippery mouth feel. All around tasty.

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip glass at room temperature. A: Pours a clear russet brown, and forms a thin tan head that quickly disappears into a cap and ring. Virtually no lacing. S: Caramel toffee malt, sweet and warm, wafts out of the glass. There’s a faint musty tone underlying the malt, a bit like a horse blanket. T: Toffee malt with a side of caramel, right out the gate, with some biscuity tones along for the ride. Sweetness is definitely a hallmark of this beer - it drinks a bit like a bread pudding. I get no fruity tones or tastes to this beer, so I am uncertain if those might come out with some age. It’s a tour de sweet malt, though! The ABV stays well hidden, even through the finish, which lingers as a spot of molasses toast. M: Creamy, sticky, and full, this is definitely a doppelbock. O: Solid indeed, for a US crack at a doppelbock. It could stand a bit more fruit character to round out the flavor profile, but overall, not bad.

Draft @ Bocktown, PIT. Very dark amber color, with very little tan head. Didn’t notice any aroma, but there had to be some! Very nice malty flavor. Almost a little too sweet. medium bodied. Pretty dopplebock.

Poured from can into a snifter. Pours a dark brown/red with a very small tan head. Aroma consists of dark fruits, nuts, roasted malts, and caramel. All of those aromas come through in the taste with additions to vanilla, toffee, tobacco, and chocolate. Some aluminum comes through in the taste as well, but it does not dampen the flavor. It is a very sweet beer. Medium bodied beer with low carbonation and a velvety mouth feel.

Pours a deep copperish brown pour, with a Small beige head. Aroma is very rich bready caramel malt. The taste is sweet with some toasted malt flavor and hints of vanilla, dark fruit and baked bread. Chewy mouth feel. some spicy hops in the finish but not overbearing. Very tasty and true to the Doppelbock style.
