3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Deep amber with medium foamy brown head.
Aroma : Rubber and phenolic notes. Caramel and piny citrusy hops. Lots of caramel, not much roasted malt. Why is this a Black IPA ?
Taste : Citrusy and piny with nice caramel. No phenolic notes. Finish nicely hoppy with pine and citrusy notes, nice roasted caramel too.
Overall : Either I’ve got the wrong beer or the style for this is wrong. This is not a black IPA but just an IPA with lots of caramel malt. Nose is slightly off because of the phenolic notes. Taste is pretty good, nice mouthfeel, nice hops. Nice long well balanced finish. Pretty good.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
$4.49 for an 11.2 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Labeled as “ L’Exploratrice Hoppy Porter” Must be bottle fermented since there was a ton of floating years particles noticeable in the dark brown liquid. Almost no retention in the English pint glass. Nose is pine with light citrus notes. Touch of chocolate malt. Taste is similar to the nose however, much lighter. Also has a mild sourness that detracts from the flavors. Short finish with the exception of the strange sourness. Second brew I’m rating from this brewery. At this point not sure I will buy any others. No major problems just real average at best.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Poured dark brown color with an average to large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted earthy hop with a small dark malt aroma. Medium body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium dark bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good complex beer.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
11.2 oz bottle, as Hoppy Porter. Pours a clear light brown body with a small fizzy off-white head that left some sparce lacing. The nose is just slightly hoppy with some light chocolate malt and some slight graininess. The flavor is not really up my alley. Not quite chocolaty or roasty enough to classify it as a Porter, I can see why it’s a Black IPA vs the Porter it’s labeled. The hops are moderately bitter up front, and linger a bit on the finish along with a slight sourness. Fairly light bodied but a little clingy on the back end. Not bad, but not something that I’d buy a second time.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle poured dark brown in color with a 2 finger off-white head that left some nice thin lacing on the glass. Aroma is medium roasted malts and hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is chocolate and fruity sweetness with some roasted malt and hop bitterness. My bottle listed the style as a hoppy porter, but was not all that hoppy. Medium body and light carbonation. An interesting and unique porter style beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted from bottle into nucleated pint glass. Mine was labelled Bière Trois Dames L’Exploratrice Hoppy Porter. Poured an opaque, very dark reddish-brown color with creamy foam, somewhat lasting with Belgian lace. Aromas of toast, caramel, strong toffee, coffee with cream, some (though far fewer than expected) perfumey hops. Complex malt-sweetness with roasty and nutty notes, moderate bittering and flavoring hops. Medium-heavy body, syrupy mouthfeel, lasting bittersweet aftertaste. My bottle was labelled Hoppy Porter, but was apparently an alias for this entry which is labelled as Black IPA. It was definitely not true-to-style for either of those descriptions. Which is fine; the best, most sophisticated brews defy clear categories. If I had to, I’d say this most resembled a refined old-world bock or dopplebock (though only 5.3% ABV). My first Swiss beer, and I’m impressed. I wonder if their others are this interesting and well-balanced? Delicious. Recommended.

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 3/20
I let this warm a bit from the fridge. I think this is another beer that is turning. Poured with a slightly thick and creamy, light tan head that soon subsided to a light cover and a little lace. Color is a hazy brown amber with trub particles floating. Aroma is funk, yeast, fruit, musty. Flavor is similar but is dominated by a tartness. No trace of hop in nose or flavor. Body is decent and carbonation soft. Finish is like flavor and I’m dumping the rest of it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours murky brown with some whitish bubbles on top and a chocolate aroma. It seems like everything from this brewery is either funky looking or funky tasting or both, but usually in a good way. This is not a usual brown ale. It is sweet and a little fruity with a hint of chocolate.
