3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BMan1113VR (7420) - Los Angeles, California, USA - AUG 21, 2012Bottle. Pours with a mostly clear, quite dark, wooden brown body with a tan head atop. Aroma from a distance of brown sugar, molasses and coffee. On closer inspection: birch bark, light licorice, medium roast, medium coffee, sour, dark currants, earthy, nutty, hazelnuts. Flavors are malty and sweet. A bit tin like. Strong hazelnut. Medium coffee, light roasty smokey quality. Licorice. A touch thin on body, medium carbonation. No warming for 7.2%. Light tobacco finish. Decent, and probably a touch better than the score prescribes.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 adamah (88) - - JUN 13, 2013
Not very sour. The aroma is there but the flavor is dominated by the espresso. Which is good, not overpowering and just a hint of sour tart towards the end.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 junon (327) - Honolulu, Hawaii, USA - APR 25, 2013
This is a first. The actual flavour I like BUT not in a beer. I’m actually brain storming about sauces I can make with this.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Plovmand (5747) - Helsinge, DENMARK - APR 6, 2013
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is brett, ripe fruit, chocolate and coffee. Sour bitter coffee flavor. Somewhat tart. Chocolate and a hint of roasted malt. Light vanilla. I'm not very good at these sour stouts but this had an interesting edge.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Lubiere (8335) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 17, 2013
A dark stout, viscous in appearance, with a very thin brown head. In aroma, a light chocolate malt with light dark fruits. In mouth, a nice stout with coffee grinds, fruit acidity, peated notes, a bit light but overall quite nice.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 bartlebier (523) - Baden-Württemberg, GERMANY - MAR 16, 2013
33cl bottle, thanks Allen! - Interesting, if ultimately multiply failed brew from an interesting brewery. From the beginning, the watery, translucent reddish brown pour and the nose, lacking all coffee aromas, prepare for a dubious "espresso stout" experience. Mouthfeel and taste reminded me of an oud bruin enriched with autumnal fallen leaves, as in the malt base of Struise Rosse. Taste is rather old tobacco as in cigars, reminding me of a spectacularly undrinkable Italian tobacco stout on draught @Che siete venuti da fà in Rome, plus slightly acidic old filter coffee. hard to pinpoint where the acidity has its place, as there apparently is an official "sour" edition of this...and the cidic malts occupy the spot where other espresso stouts have chocolate or burnt malt notes. One confusing brew and an interesting, if mixed experience I could not entirely see through.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mcberko (4146) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 4, 2013
330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of watered down espresso beans and not much else - pretty monolithically coffee-like. Flavour is very similar, bringing out pleasant espresso notes, but they seemed watered down a bit, mixed with a bit of a rubbery quality. Fairly thin, watery palate, but decent enough flavours and mouthfeel - just leaves a bit to be desired. Decent.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Gerbeer (891) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 2, 2013
330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with medium brown head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of rich dark coffee and a hint of dark chocolate. Flavors of watery strong coffee (where’s the malts?) and cocoa powder. A light coffee flavored stout.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 fiulijn (12360) - Malmö, DENMARK - JAN 30, 2013
Draught at REAL A Gastropub, Honolulu, HI Black color, with beige creamy head. Mild aroma of roasted malts, with light sourness, light wood/timber. The mouthfeel is smooth, the roasted malt flavor is mild, with moderate sourness; the bitterness level is between fair and low. Balanced. Not a favorite style of mine, but surely very well brewed. Earlier Rating: 1/11/2009 Total Score: 3.8 2009-04-04, "Mange, c’est de la bière!" at the brewery, 6-3-7-3-13=32 Black color; small head quickly disappearing. Nice, delicate coffee aroma. Weaker body than expected, powerful roasted malt flavor and coffee, more evident at the end. Quite strong bitterness.
2008-11-18, courtesy of Philippe (Bov), 7-4-8-3-16=38 Black color; medium, creamy head. The name is a promise: from the aroma to the flavor there is a very nice coffee character, never obsessively burnt, mildly roasted as the Italian label (Espresso) that it bears; the body is thinner that expected after 7.5% ABV, almost dry at the end; there is light liquorice in the aroma and a very light creamy mouthfeel. The more I drink of it, the more I like. Very good.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 reebtogi (3388) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - JAN 13, 2013
330ml bottle pours a jet black color with a small light brown head that leaves only a few spots of lacing behind. Aroma is dominated by coffee with some chocolate present as well. Taste is also a strong coffee bitterness which overpowers the chocolate malty sweetness and any hops that may be present. Although, this is a high quality brew, the coffee was just too much for me.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 ARMed (557) - Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 21, 2012
This beer has a tart finish that creates a poor palate. While I enjoyed the coffee aroma and flavor, I was disappointed in both the lack of full bodiness and poor palate. The beer is a malty midnight stout that has some very good qualities, but the one that I just can’t seem to get past is the one that unfortunately dominates my rating.
