COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shangrila was the first creation from Birrificio Troll. It is of dark amber color and has a persistent head and with its 8.5 alc./vol. it warms the palate and the heart. Shangrila is brewed using malt, English hops and a mixture of spices from the Himalayas: tandori (Blend of coriander, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, ginger, cardamom, saffron), curry, pepper, anise. Shangrila is a complex full bodied beer with exotic scents and an intense flavor. Shangrila is a perfect companion for meats of every type, especially ones grilled over charcoal. It also pairs very well with fine cheeses.

Bottle sampled on 3/12/11: Pours a clear deep copper with a small-bubbled froth of off-white head. Has a lightly sweet biscuity and light caramel nose with a touch of cinnamon. Starts with decent fullness and some sweet caramel maltiness with a good balance of unique spices and light oxidation before a drier smooth finish. A pretty unique brew.

Bottle, argo0 tasting. Amery-orange with an eggshell head. Honey and all-spice in the aroma and some light grapes. Nutmeg, spice, cinnamon, and an very odd flavor overall. Too many things going on here in a not great way. Lighter body.

Bottle. Opened with a pop and gushed on my floor. After a quick cleanup, I poured into a snifter. It’s a slightly orange-hued brown with beige head and is opaque with floaties. The aroma is sweet malt, a slight fruity note, raisin, fresh muffins, and an odd sweet spiciness. The flavor is more assertive with the strange spices. I get the anise, coriander, and pepper right away. Then come the ginger and cardamom. The curry is detectable, but I wouldn’t have noticed it if I didn’t know it was there. A slightly sweet malt backbone helps keep the spice under control. Very bran-muffin like. The finish is somewhat dry and yeasty. It leaves a dusty spice aftertaste. Fair, but not great. I’d like to try it with some Asian dishes, though.

Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted), light hops (spicy), and average esters (fruity) with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Flavor is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted, nutty), light hops (earthy), and average esters (fruity) with notes of dates, honey, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation, low creaminess with a dry and biting finish.
