In short: An inoffensive amateurish citrusy pale ale. meh
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed fresh the day after purchase in a Norway store
The look: Mostly cloudy burnt orange body topped by a small off-white head
In long: Nose is a bit citrusy, cat fur and notes of tobacco. Taste is crème caramel, too much yeast, oranges, ripe apricots, vegetal notes. Fluffy body with a lot of big bubbles, foamy mouthfeel. An overall sensation of an amateurish beer. The bottling date is written on the bottle, I drank my bottle one month after the bottling date but it felt like an old tired pale ale. Fortunately it is not very flavourful so all-in-all it is more an inoffensive boring beer than a bad beer. Tick. Trollbryggeriet is the “Troll Brewery” because Norway is rooted in myths and legends, and after travelling this country I now feel like I’m some kind of Norwegian god except without the power, adoration, wisdom, etc... basically what I’m trying to say is most people don’t care if I exist or not.

Pours cloudy amber look with a thin timid white head. Slight malty and caramel aroma, some sweet nose too. Medium to heavy sweetness on the taste. Lack of character and it gets watery. Light body, thin feel, soft carbonation, weak bitter finish. Bad batch or what? Nothing special.

Pours a crystal clear red-brown colour, with a clear white coloured head that last a long time. The aroma accually quite smokey, suprisingly. There are also some raisins and a tiny bit of leather. Unusual aroma for a pale ale. Taste mainly dominated by the smoke, with some leaves and bread. The aftertaste reveals some more classic pale ale notes, like citrus and pine, also with some herbs. A avarage beer, wouldn’t cisider it to be a pale ale though.

Bottle. Amber colored with a small offwhite head. Hoppy aroma, fruit and malt, good taste of caramel and flowery hops, bitterness is good, but the beer as a whole isn’t very special.

Bottle from Meny Grønland. Pours slightly hazy amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, fruits, caramel and with hints of hops. Not so much carbonation in this one (batch 76). I think it was more hoppy last time I tried it, this time it more malty and some dried fruits, hops are hardly noticable. I’m not sure if this bottle was okay, the beer seems quite strange now. Sweet and a bit watery with just a hint of bitterness. Still drinkable, but I will try this again when I find another batch. The first time I tried it I really liked it and thought it was a quite nice 4,7% beer. This time I’m not so sure, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and re-try it later.

Medium bitterness and a note of sweetness, lasting medium bitter finish. Fruits and hops in the aroma. Creamy texture (due to generous carbonation, I guess), light body. A murky dark amber colour, head is frothy, dense, off-white and long-lasting. All in all this tastes very well, but lacks a bit in intensity and mouthfeel. (Bottle)

Pours a very good looking, slightly hazy, medium amber with plenty of bubbles: this one is clearly generously carbonated! A huge white head that forms almost too easily supports the Theory of High Carbonation. The head is fully lasting and deposits large amounts of foamy lacing on the glass. The aroma is nice and hoppy hoppy: fruity, citrus, grapefruit. Also faint caramel and some yeast and a dusty feel. Light to medium sweet and medium bitter taste. An excellent long-lasting, medium bitter finish. The flavours are not as citric as the aroma indicates. A bit disappointing flavour profile, only quite faint grapefruity citric notes and yeast. Still very crisp and refreshing due to the lovely bitterness and the little amount of citrus that actually are present. I’m not able to pin down any specific malty flavours, despite the pronounced sweet taste (but given the caramel notes in the aroma I guess there is some caramel in the flavours as well). The body is fairly light and the texture is quite thin, but the medium to lively carbonation masks these shortcomings very well. A nice beer even if the flavours are a bit vague.
[50 cl bottle, batch 48, from Meny Grønland, Oslo]
