This stuff pours masterfully. The head is easily manipulated after a few minutes but always substantial. The aroma is pretty yeasty and fascinating in complexity. The palate is various and the taste is as good as the aroma. This became my favorite beer when I found that I liked the art that’s achieved through dark IPA. I am a stout fan and IPA fan in particular. I am not a fan of Belgians or Trappists. Or the ones I’ve tried...

Capped 750 from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours a ruddy dark brown with a 5 finger creamy/foamy beige head. The aroma brings to mind an Abba Zabba bar (taffy candy bars with peanut butter centers). Tho in years passed I think the contents were longitudinally striated. Med body more or less. There’s a really nice toffee/treacle flavor. Not a lot of bitter. Clearly this finishes on the sweet side, but it is a unique flavor experience in beer. Put this one on your bucket list.

Snifter pour dark dark brown with thin khaki head that doesn’t stay. Nose is mild, smooth malt, some sweet caramel... Not bad. Flavor has a little more going on, but not tons. Sweet malts and caramel, some chocolate notes.. Lighter body for an imperial. Could be worse.
4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 VT (796) - Quebec City, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 21, 2013
750 ml bottle. Pours a foggy dark brown with a ruby red tint and a resilient, creamy beige head. Aroma is roast, coffee, licorice. Flavor is a typically belgian-dubbelish start, very sweet with brown sugar, candi sugar and almost maple syrup-like notes. Some obvious roast in there, too. Finish is clearly coffeeish, good roast feel in there. Nice level of bitterness. Some lingering licorice, sweet flavors. Medium to strong body, somewhat oily mouthfeel. A very good dark ale. Although I felt it lacked in body for an imperial stout, I felt it had very good drinkability, and easily combined the best attributes of good belgian strongs and imperial stouts.
