COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Troubadour Magma is an amber colored beer with the bitterness of an American IPA but balanced with the fruitiness of a Belgian Triple. Bottle@Home. Citrus, basil and union aroma but I still somehow liked it. Cloudy, dark yellow, off-white head, fair lace. Plastic, sweet, bitter, herbal, hint of citrus. Sticky and alcoholic. Bit unbalanced.

Pours a hazy golden honey toned body with a huge fluffy white head and great retention. Almost like a little cake sitting atop my brew. Pine, vine, malt, underlying citrus. Smells a bit like citrus and sticky but not icky if that makes sense. Probably a bit older has a definitive malt character that is reminiscent of cider and apples, with raisins and cranberries added.

This beer is full of yeast sediment and it floats and causes the beer to be very cloudy. A big orange gold head has good retention. Light citrus fruit in the nose and some aromatic spice but very little hop. Big citrus fruit taste starts. There are hop notes but they are soft and subtle. They add light bitterness and character but little flavor, especially for a double IPA. They grow in prominence as the beer warms but are never big. The Belgian influence is found. Yeast, candi sugar, toffee. The front of my tongue is stimulated. This might or might not be an IIPA but it is enjoyable and a fascinating beer. Unlike anything I have had and, though they are not big, the hops make it unique.

[3/6/11] Bottle at ZBF 2011. Clear deep golden. Aroma of alcohol and fruits. Sweet malty flavor with some honey and fruits and a more bitter and alcoholic finish. Medium-bodied. Not so good.

Now this is something. It is cloudy orange in color w/ a head of large bubbles and lots of lace. The nose is very potent sweet florals w/ a dusting of baby powder and lavender. Sweet and sticky on the palate, this comes off as rather sluggish despite a pretty high level of carbonation. The sweetness does compliment a juicy banana element but it tends to cloy a bit. I am not sure quite what they were going for w/ this beer but I think it fails both as an IPA and as a Belgian tripel. Neither of those styles should be as heavy as this is. I can appreciate it as sort of a Belgian barleywine w/ itís thickness and light alcohol burn but I really canít get into it in general.

I have brewed my own Belgian-IPA and I always what to try the latest in the evolution of this style to see how I am doing. 11.2 oz bottle, this one is a new creation form this brewery. The bright orange cap has the date 23/02/12, Iíll assume that is its best by date, I want to enjoy the hops so iíll take it now. It is another Belgian Tripel/IPA combo beer. Pours into my tulip a deep clear amber, the head is big and white and recedes decently slowly, leaving spotted lacing. The smell is pretty good here, some citrus, tropical, grass, and slight pine arise form the hops, the yeast is there with a punchy spice and the malt backbone adds some depth and sweetness. The taste is pretty good. It isnít bitter at all. It is a tropical fruit bomb that isnít out of control with the pineapple. The yeast is a bit more subtle in the flavor but provides once again a nice spice. The malt is very sweet and you can feel this one at 9%. It tastes a ton like my BIPA, definitely some noble hops, I also had some Americans too but i donít taste it here. This is a unique recipe that should be tried by BIPA lovers. Not bad; not great. Poured with a large, thick, creamy, foamy, frothy, cream colored head and lots of lace. Color is a very hazy to cloudy medium amber. Aroma is lots of caramel, malt, toffee, hops, a little fruit. Flavor is like nose with bittersweetness standing out. Body is full and good although it has alcohol warming. Finish is like flavor and of medium length.
