Bottle at Paters Vaetje, Antwerp. Very dark brown/cloudy with thick beige head. Dry malt aroma with choc and camp coffee. Some raisin. Nice choc and fruit in mouth with grainy dry finish. Bit of vinous in mouth. Really excellent beer, wonderful in mouth, just needs a bit more complexity.

Smells stouty. Thi is nice. Definitely sweeter than most stouts but it isn’t light either. My first Belgian stout I must give a thumbs up to. A little dryness in the head but decent throughout.

Pours a very dark ruby that has some head that does not stay around for too long. Nose is strong with sweetness and some firm caramel. I get a sense that there is a coffee tone that is very far in the background that is just barely peeking through. Flavor is beautiful. Outstandingly unique. Sweet for a bit, and then the stout characteristics kick in. Slight coffee accents follow the thick sweet and then it ends with a bubbly sensation on your tongue. Almost seems to be a touch of port to it. Feel is extremely well balanced. Slight bubble. Drinkability. This is not one to really drink hard and fast. Definitely a sipper...but sippable for your entire night and then some. Beyond worth trying. If you have the opportunity, trying this is imperative.

330 ml, bb 09 02 09. Dark brown with red highlights. Five finger, creamy and lasting head. Aroma is spicy cocoa, tart cherries, and slight molasses. Nice malty-yeasty flavor blend of cocoa, molasses, leather, charred wood, and sour-acidic cherry. Medium body is dry, and very acidic-tingly, yet smooth at the same time. A great Belgian yeast stylized take on the stout genre.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2012 Une bière forte belge qui m’a totalement prit par surprise. Le caractère de la levure est juste assez présente dans l’arôme et le palais sans toutefois dominer comme le font certaines du même style. Riche et chargé de saveur.

Very dark chocolate in color. A decent size head that offers a creamy taste and aroma. The beer itself is complex in flavor. Slightly bitter in the beginning then a rush of flavor followed by a stronger bitter aftertaste. Excellent beer!

In bottle at de Garre. Pours a very dark brown colour with a thick tan head. Aroma of liquorice, roasty malt, dark chocolate, caramel, black pepper and alcohol. Similar flavours with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Lovely with well balanced alcohol and lingering liquorice, roasty malt and dark chocolate again.

Wow! This is one of my absolute favorites. It is to my taste a bit milk-stout ish, as if whey was added. That gives this beer a softer and creamy taste. Still the beer is a strong and full bodied belgian ale. Tbe taste reminds me of fudge, chocolate and raisins.

Only Belgian beer I’ve had that reminds me of an American imperial stout, but does it without the viscosity (impressive at 8.5%). Really big, flavorful beer. Enjoyed at Wiering in Leuven. Curious how this compares to the Troubadour imperial stout (the one that’s actually designated as such) - my notes on that one were very similar.
