75cl bottle @ Midlands Tasting Aug 14, at Richie’s Hop Palace. Been on my ’to try’ list for a while this, and finally get to open at such a prestigious occasion. Pours very dark brown with creamy tan head. Big thick bitter hoppy taste with dark coal, pine and additional thick chocolate malts. Much more bitterness than I was expecting. Great stuff.

Bottle 330ml, pours dark brown, cloudy with stable off-white head. Intense aroma of coffee mixed with some herbal and resin notes of hops, and a little bit of alcohol. Medium bitterness, some chocolate and coffee notes. Also some alcohol noticable. Suprisingly light body as for imperial, soft carbonation, nice bitter finish.

0.33L bottle. Pours clear black-red with a frothy, tan head. Nice combination of malt and hop aromas on this one. Resiny and floral hops, roasted malt, coffee, and some basement aromas, almost like camembert. Initial flavors are quite sweet with bready malt. Floral and resiny hop flavor, transitions to bitterness with lots of burnt malt flavor and herby hop, leaving warm alcohol in the back of the throat and chest. Full-body with a creamy mouthfeel and average carbonation. Overall, there’s a lot to like in this beer. It’s on the sweeter side, but has a great profile all-around.

bartlebier (2533) - Belchium im Biersgau, GERMANY - AUG 17, 2014
75cl bottle, traded at ZBF 2013, merci, shared at Hugi’s homebrew Tasting. Pours a matt black, generous beige head. Immediate charred malt, ground Nescafe, roast porter aromas in the nose, given an earthy-white pepper edge from the BE hops. Taste also is very blackened malt forward, going on ashen, soil, pollen and floral notes gently coming in to join the dry molasses and caramel as it warms, with none of its 9,2% apparent. Along the lines of De la Senne’s BE interpretation of a Black IPA, with less lustre, tilting more towards Imperial porter on account of the ground coffee and raw powder chocolate graininess.
